Chapter 1

The private ocean-conservation gala inside the Mafia-owned Boston marine museum was a breathtaking affair, a masterful blending of high society's glittering facade with the cold, unyielding undercurrents of Dominic's expansive syndicate. Beneath the soaring, vaulted ceilings and the ambient, ethereal blue glow of massive aquarium viewing walls, guests in designer evening wear mingled with calculated poise. They sipped vintage champagne and exchanged polite pleasantries, wholly unaware or perhaps willfully ignorant of the dark empire that funded the very floor they stood upon. Lightweight coral-display sculptures and rolling dive-equipment cases lined the perimeter of the exclusive donor lounge, framed by neatly folded exhibit screens and scattered diving fins and masks that added a touch of maritime authenticity to the luxurious setting.
At the center of it all, seated at the head of the VIP dining table, sat Dominic. At sixty-one years old, he was a man whose mere presence commanded absolute silence without a single word needing to be spoken. With deep, rich ebony skin, an angular face, and a sharply defined jawline resting beneath a short, meticulously well-groomed full beard, he looked startlingly handsome—like a veteran movie star gracing the silver screen. Yet, beneath his sophisticated, custom-tailored midnight-blue velvet dinner jacket, a black silk shirt unbuttoned slightly at the chest, and perfectly tailored black trousers, he was a terrifyingly dangerous mafia boss. His every movement was measured, deliberate, and undeniably cold. His polished black loafers rested firmly on the carpet, rooting him as the undisputed king of his domain.
Beside him stood three-year-old Maya, his beloved granddaughter, her adorable face glowing with warm, radiant brown skin. She wore a cute, carefully selected silver sequined charity-gala dress that caught the aquatic light, paired with a white fuzzy bolero cardigan, pristine white tights, and shiny silver Mary Jane flats. In her tiny hands, she tightly clutched a handmade paper card—a colorful, slightly crooked drawing she had spent hours crafting specifically for her grandfather. As the extended family gathered around the massive mahogany table, Maya happily stepped forward, reaching out with her small hands to pull out the heavy chair positioned right next to Dominic's, her large eyes shining with innocent excitement.
Before she could even touch the velvet cushion, Beatrice—Dominic's sixty-four-year-old older sister—stepped in with a sudden, vicious flash of malice. Dressed in an elegant emerald-green silk gala gown that contrasted sharply with her fair, rosy skin, Beatrice looked every bit the entitled matriarch. Her pearl choker gleamed under the lights as she reached out with her evening-gloved hands.
With a sudden, violent motion, Beatrice yanked Maya’s chair backward just as the little girl began sitting down.
"Ah!" Maya cried out in shock as the abrupt movement caused her to lose her balance entirely, her tiny body crashing hard onto the carpet. The sudden impact knocked the breath out of her, and her handmade paper card slipped from her tiny fingers, sliding silently beneath the heavy mahogany table into the shadows.
A sharp, collective gasp echoed from the nearby guests who had witnessed the cruel act. But Beatrice didn't flinch. She merely offered a cold, smug smirk, looking down her aristocratic nose at the crying child sprawled on the floor.
"That seat is for family," Beatrice sneered, her voice dripping with venom and a cruel, unwavering superiority. "Not begging. You'd do well to remember your place, little girl."
Maya burst into uncontrollable tears, clutching her scraped knee as she stared up at her great-aunt in absolute confusion and hurt. "It hurts, Grandpa," she whimpered, her lower lip trembling.

"Hush now, child," Beatrice snapped impatiently, adjusting her emerald gown. "Don't cause a scene in front of our guests. You should be grateful you're even allowed in a place like this."
The air in the entire donor lounge instantly froze. The pleasant, ambient sound of the marine exhibits faded into a suffocating, lethal silence. Every guest, every capo, and every family member waited, holding their collective breath, to see how the terrifying Dominic would react to such blatant, public disrespect directed toward his blood.
