Chapter 1

The afternoon sun poured through the massive floor-to-ceiling windows of the Mercer family estate, casting a bright, cinematic glow over the sprawling living room. The lighting was flawlessly natural, lacking any dull or yellow tint, illuminating the gathering in vibrant, crisp colors. It was an exclusive family event, filled with the melodic hum of American accents, clinking crystal glasses, and the rustle of expensive fabrics. Standing near the grand fireplace, commanding the attention of the room simply by existing, was Adrian Mercer. At thirty-five years old, the light-skinned African American man possessed a strikingly masculine face with strong cheekbones and a sharply defined jawline. He was as handsome as a movie star, his deep-set dark eyes scanning the room with sharp intelligence. His thick, naturally curly black hair was styled in a clean low taper fade, complementing his neatly groomed short beard. Tall, broad-shouldered, and athletic, Adrian’s powerful physique was showcased perfectly by his fitted charcoal shirt, tailored trousers, and polished leather shoes. A heavy silver wristwatch caught the sunlight as he crossed his arms.

"You've done well for yourself, Adrian," Walter Mercer said, taking a sip from his glass of bourbon. The sixty-eight-year-old patriarch, a White American man with fair, rosy skin, wore a crisp button-down shirt and polished shoes. "I always knew bringing you into this family was the right choice. The firm's quarterly numbers are exceptional."

"The numbers reflect the work, Walter," Adrian replied. His voice was a rich, deep baritone. He spoke slowly, with controlled pauses, keeping his volume low but carrying a heavy, undeniable authority. "I don't leave anything to chance. You taught me that much."

"I did," Walter chuckled, though his smile didn't quite reach his eyes. "But you need to learn to relax. You’ve been pacing like a caged lion since you arrived. It's a family party. Enjoy the champagne. Enjoy the company."

"I enjoy peace of mind," Adrian said, his gaze drifting away from the older man. "And in a room full of sharks, peace is a rare commodity."

"You wound me," Walter said, feigning offense. "We are your family, Adrian. We look out for our own."

Adrian did not reply immediately. His attention had shifted to the center of the room, where his four-year-old daughter, Lila, was playing with a set of wooden blocks. Lila was a breathtakingly adorable African American girl with glowing, medium-brown skin. She wore a casual, bright yellow sundress and spotless white sneakers. Hanging across her small chest was a tiny, brightly colored pouch that held her asthma inhaler. She was the center of Adrian’s universe, the single most important piece of his entire existence.

"She looks happy," Walter noted, following Adrian's gaze.

"She is," Adrian murmured, his hardened features softening for a fraction of a second. "But her asthma has been acting up with the seasonal changes. I need to keep a close eye on her today."

"Don't hover," Walter advised dismissively. "Children are resilient. Let Theresa watch her for a moment while we go to my study to discuss the upcoming merger. It will only take ten minutes."

Adrian hesitated, his protective instincts warring with his professional obligations. He looked across the room at Theresa, Walter’s forty-two-year-old daughter. The White American woman possessed fair, rosy skin and wore an elegant silk blouse, tailored trousers, and sharp heels. Heavy gold earrings and a matching bracelet clinked as she laughed at a joke.

"Ten minutes, Walter," Adrian finally agreed, his tone leaving absolutely no room for negotiation. "Not a minute more."
