Chapter 1

The private donor reception inside the sprawling, Mafia-owned botanical conservatory in Boston was an exquisite display of untouchable power masquerading as philanthropy. Under the massive, arched glass ceilings, vibrant orchids and lush tropical ferns cascaded from the walls, their bright colors illuminated by strategically placed ambient lighting. The air was thick with the rich scent of damp earth and blooming jasmine. Affluent donors, high-ranking capos, and impeccably dressed bodyguards mingled near the indoor koi garden, their low voices creating a steady, polite hum over the sound of the cascading waterfalls. Beside the stone edge of the pond stood a rolling bonsai-transport trolley, heavily loaded with lightweight plastic nursery pots, soft moss pads, and burlap wraps. Nearby, a freestanding shade-panel rack held rolled fabric sun panels and folded garden cloths.
At the epicenter of the room stood Roxanne, a forty-seven-year-old woman whose sheer presence was as intimidating as a veteran Mafia boss. She wore a deep emerald silk jumpsuit that moved like liquid under the lights, paired perfectly with a tailored black blazer, statement gold hoop earrings, and sharp stiletto heels. A luxury chronograph watch gleamed on her wrist as she checked the time. Her power was absolute, her elegance weaponized.
Beside her, holding her hand tightly, was her three-year-old son, Malik. The little boy looked incredibly cute in a miniature tuxedo complete with a tiny bowtie, a soft velvet vest, and polished leather loafers. He watched the massive, colorful koi fish glide beneath the surface of the pond, his eyes wide with wonder. He had never been this close to such deep water before, and Roxanne always kept a careful eye on him because he could not swim.
On the opposite side of the pond stood Penelope, Roxanne’s thirty-nine-year-old cousin. Dressed in a lavish floral-print chiffon maxi dress, Penelope radiated an arrogant, untouchable aura. A thick pearl necklace rested against her pale skin, and heavy diamond rings glittered on her fingers. She had always harbored a bitter, festering jealousy toward Roxanne's ascension to power.
"He's getting too close to the edge, Roxanne," Penelope called out over the sound of the waterfall, her voice carrying a sharp, condescending edge. "You coddle the boy. He needs to learn how to stand on his own."
"Mind your own business, Penelope," Roxanne replied smoothly, her voice a low, lethal hum that commanded immediate respect. "My son is fine right where he is."
"Is he?" Penelope sneered, her eyes flashing with sudden, unpredictable malice. "In our world, weakness is a liability."
Before anyone could register what was happening, Penelope stepped forward, her strappy high heels clicking sharply against the stone. With a violent, deliberate shove, she pushed her hands squarely into Malik’s small back.

"Mommy!" Malik screamed as he lost his balance.
The little boy tumbled forward, his tiny tuxedo catching the air before he crashed heavily into the deep koi pond. The splash echoed through the conservatory like a gunshot.
