Chapter 4

The air in the conservatory felt as heavy as lead. Roxanne took a single, slow step forward, the water squelching in her expensive heels. Her statement gold hoop earrings swung slightly, catching the ambient light. She was no longer a mother comforting her child; she was the head of the most ruthless syndicate in Boston, and blood had just been drawn.
Before Roxanne could close the distance to Penelope, Harrison stepped quickly between them. Despite the sharp pain in his foot from her stiletto, the older man tried to reassert his authority. He adjusted the lapels of his beige linen suit, his vintage pocket watch catching the light, and looked at Roxanne with a mixture of annoyance and superiority.
"Roxanne, that is enough," Harrison said dismissively, holding up a hand to stop her advance. "Control your temper before you embarrass yourself further in front of the donors. The boy is fine."
Roxanne stopped, her jaw clenching so tight the sharp angle of her face seemed carved from obsidian. "Embarrass myself?" she repeated, her voice dropping to a dangerous, terrifying whisper. "Your niece just threw my three-year-old son into deep water knowing he cannot swim, and you restrained me from saving him."
"It was just a little lesson," Harrison retorted coldly, his eyes narrowing. "You coddle the boy. In our world, the weak are consumed. Penelope was simply showing him the reality of the life he was born into. You should be thanking her for toughening him up."
"A little lesson," Roxanne repeated, the words tasting like venom on her tongue.
"Yes," Harrison stated firmly. "Now go dry off, change your clothes, and act like the boss I trained you to be. Penelope meant no real harm, and I won't allow you to tear this family apart over a child's tantrum."
"You won't allow me?" Roxanne asked softly, tilting her head.
Harrison’s patience finally snapped. Believing his age and former rank still held absolute power over her, he made a fatal miscalculation. With a snarl of frustration, Harrison swung his fist first, aiming a solid punch directly at Roxanne's jaw to physically put her back in her place.
The guests gasped in horror as the former adviser attacked the current boss.
But Roxanne was far faster and infinitely more lethal than her uncle anticipated. She slipped entirely outside the punch with terrifying grace, stepping smoothly to the side as Harrison's fist sailed harmlessly past her ear. Her movement was so fluid it looked choreographed.
Before Harrison could pull his arm back or adjust his balance, Roxanne planted her stiletto firmly on the wet tile and retaliated. She drove one explosive, flawlessly executed counterpunch straight across his face.

The sickening crunch of bone breaking echoed through the massive glass conservatory. Harrison’s eyes rolled back instantly as the sheer kinetic force of the blow lifted him entirely off his feet. He spun violently backward, completely out of control, his arms flailing wildly in the air.
He crashed directly into the rolling bonsai-transport trolley positioned near the edge of the koi pond.
