Chapter 8

The command hung in the air with absolute finality. The lower levels of the conservatory were strictly off-limits to the public, heavily soundproofed, and notorious within the syndicate as a place from which very few people ever returned.

"No! Please! Roxanne, I'm family!" Penelope shrieked, kicking wildly as two massive bodyguards pulled her out of the collapsed shade-panel rack. She dragged her feet, tearing her floral-print chiffon dress against the metal bars, but the men hauled her away with effortless, terrifying efficiency.

Harrison didn't scream, but the color drained entirely from his weathered face. He realized too late that his era of untouchable influence had officially ended. Silas shoved him roughly toward the discreet service elevator hidden behind the cascading waterfalls.

"You will regret this, Roxanne!" Harrison shouted, his voice cracking as the elevator doors slid open. "The other families won't stand for a purge of the old guard!"

"Let them come," Roxanne replied coldly, not even turning around to watch them leave. "I will drown them all."

As the elevator doors closed, cutting off Penelope’s hysterical sobbing, the heavy tension in the conservatory finally began to shift. The immediate threat was gone, but the atmosphere remained charged with electricity. Roxanne stood alone in the center of the room, water dripping steadily from her emerald jumpsuit, the undisputed queen of her empire.

She turned slowly, her dark, piercing eyes sweeping over the pale, terrified faces of the affluent donors and the remaining capos. No one dared to meet her gaze. They kept their heads bowed, offering silent submission to the woman who had just violently dismantled a coup in less than five minutes.

"The reception is over," Roxanne announced, her voice calm, clear, and absolute. "My staff will escort you to your vehicles. Any business we have pending will be discussed tomorrow. And for clarity..."

She paused, letting the silence stretch until it was almost painful.

"...what happened here tonight does not leave this room. If I hear a whisper of this incident on the streets, I will not ask who started the rumor. I will simply burn the entire block down. Do we understand each other?"

A chorus of fearful, hurried murmurs of agreement echoed through the crowd. The donors practically scrambled over each other to follow the conservatory staff toward the main exits, eager to put as much distance between themselves and Roxanne as physically possible.

Within minutes, the massive, lush greenhouse was completely empty, save for Roxanne and a handful of her most loyal, heavily armed guards. The sound of the waterfalls and the gentle rustling of the ferns filled the silence once more.

Roxanne let out a long, slow breath, her shoulders dropping a fraction of an inch as the adrenaline finally began to recede from her system. She walked over to the edge of the koi pond, looking down at the dark, rippling water where her son had almost died. Her reflection stared back at her—powerful, wealthy, and utterly alone at the top of the food chain.

She reached up and gently touched the statement gold hoop earring that had been knocked slightly askew during the fight. It was time to check on Malik.

"Secure the perimeter," Roxanne ordered the remaining guards. "I am going to the safe room."
