Chapter 1

The private theater charity gala in the heart of New York City was a breathtaking spectacle of extreme wealth and hidden power, bathed entirely in bright, vivid colors that popped with high-definition clarity. The natural, cinematic lighting flooding the grand ballroom and the sprawling backstage reception area was meticulously calibrated. There was absolutely no muddy or yellow tint to the illumination; it was a pristine, crisp white light that cast sharp, elegant shadows and highlighted the fair, rosy complexions of the exclusive White American guests in attendance. Men in bespoke tailored suits and women draped in cascading silk gowns mingled effortlessly, their crisp American accents blending into a sophisticated, melodic hum over the soft classical music playing from the main stage.
Standing just beyond the heavy velvet stage curtains, commanding the atmosphere of the room simply by existing, was Roland. At sixty-three years old, the Black American patriarch was a man of terrifying, deeply masculine power. He possessed the intimidating, immovable aura of a veteran Mafia boss who had built an empire with his bare hands. His rich, deep ebony skin was flawless under the bright cinematic lights, contrasting strikingly with the custom midnight-blue velvet tuxedo he wore with absolute authority. Beneath the velvet jacket, a crisp white dress shirt was accented by a perfectly tied black silk bow tie. A heavy gold signet ring rested on his finger, a vintage wristwatch gleamed on his wrist, and his polished black leather loafers rested firmly on the immaculate carpet.
"The waterfront properties have been fully secured, Roland," murmured Silas, a senior capo with fair, rosy skin and a sharp grey suit, leaning in close so as not to be overheard by the socialites. "The mayor’s office signed off on the permits this morning. The expansion is proceeding exactly as you mandated. We don't expect any further pushback from the local unions."
Roland did not immediately reply. He took a slow, measured breath, his dark, commanding eyes scanning the brightly lit reception area. When he finally spoke, his voice was a low, resonant baritone that forced the men around him to lean in.
"We do not... rely on expectations, Silas," Roland said, the controlled pauses between his words making every syllable sound incredibly measured, cold, and dangerous. "You do not expect pushback. You guarantee... that there is none. If the union leadership hesitates for even a fraction of a second, you will remind them exactly who owns the concrete beneath their feet."
"Understood, Boss," Silas nodded quickly, a bead of sweat forming on his fair brow despite the cool, climate-controlled air of the theater. "I will handle it personally tonight. The family's investments are completely insulated."
"See that they are," Roland replied smoothly. "We are visible tonight. The gala is a stage, and every family in New York is watching us. I will not tolerate any vulnerabilities being exposed."
"Speaking of vulnerabilities," Silas hesitated, glancing toward the backstage area where the rolling costume trunks and folded backdrop fabrics were stored. "Nathan is here. He brought the new woman and her brother. The word on the street is that Harrison’s crew is trying to leverage this relationship to merge their operations with ours."
Roland’s jaw tightened imperceptibly. His adopted thirty-seven-year-old son, Nathan, had always been a complicated piece on the chessboard. A White American man with a fair, rosy complexion, Nathan had grown up surrounded by Roland’s immense wealth and power, yet he constantly sought validation from the very people Roland had spent decades crushing.

"My son... is easily distracted by shiny things," Roland murmured, his eyes locking onto Nathan across the room. "But he knows the boundaries of this syndicate. Harrison will receive exactly what he has earned. Nothing."
Roland adjusted his midnight-blue velvet cuffs, preparing to navigate the treacherous political waters of the gala. But beneath the cold exterior of the Mafia boss, a singular, fiercely protective instinct was already pulling his attention away from the capos and toward the only innocent soul in the building.
