Chapter 5

The silence in the backstage reception area was absolute, heavy with the weight of a catastrophic reckoning. The bright, natural light offered no shadows for Nathan to hide within. The fair, rosy skin of the white American guests had turned a uniform, sickly pale as they realized they were witnessing the total destruction of the Boss's bloodline.

Roland slowly stood up to his full, imposing height. He kept Zuri securely cradled against his chest, his large, powerful hand resting protectively against the back of her head, ensuring she didn't have to look at the monsters standing in front of her.

He slowly turned toward his son.

The cold, sharp, intimidating eyes of the sixty-three-year-old patriarch were entirely devoid of human empathy, warmth, or forgiveness. The look he leveled at Nathan was not the look of a disappointed father; it was the chilling, calculating stare of a veteran executioner analyzing a traitor.

Nathan’s breathing became erratic. He understood the absolute, lethal danger he had just placed himself in. But instead of falling to his knees and begging for forgiveness, instead of rushing to comfort the child he had so callously denied, Nathan's cowardice drove him to make the worst possible decision.

Nathan stepped in front of Scarlett.

He physically placed his body between the Mafia boss and the woman who had just assaulted his daughter, raising his hands in a pathetic, placating gesture. He was still desperately trying to preserve the illusion of his power in front of Harrison and the watching crowd.

His expression became visibly panicked as he noticed the nearby guests, capos, and bodyguards all staring at him with unadulterated disgust. The walls of his lies were crashing down around him.

"Dad… please," Nathan stammered, his American accent dropping into a low, desperate, frantic whisper. He adjusted the collar of his sharp white dinner jacket, sweating profusely. "Let's talk about this in the private office. Don’t make this public. We can handle this quietly. It's a misunderstanding."

"A misunderstanding," Roland repeated.

His deep, resonant baritone voice was terrifyingly calm. He spaced the words deliberately, keeping his volume so low it forced the entire silent room to strain to hear him. Every syllable sounded measured, cold, and dripping with an apocalyptic danger.

"You stood by," Roland continued, taking one slow, deliberate step forward, his midnight-blue velvet tuxedo absorbing the bright light, "while this woman... struck my blood."

"She didn't know who she was, Roland!" Harrison interjected, stepping up beside Nathan. The forty-year-old Mafia associate puffed out his chest beneath his black tailcoat tuxedo, foolishly believing his own status offered him protection. "Nathan told us the child was staff! Scarlett was just disciplining an unruly servant! This is Nathan's fault, not ours!"

"You believe," Roland murmured, his gaze shifting slowly to lock onto Harrison, "that because you thought she was a servant... that striking a three-year-old child... is acceptable in my presence."

Harrison faltered, the sheer, intimidating masculinity of the Black American patriarch completely suffocating his arrogant bravado. "I... that's not what I meant. We are allies, Roland. We shouldn't let a minor incident with a kid ruin a profitable merger."

"There is no merger," Roland stated, his voice a dead, emotionless void. "And you... are not my ally."
