Chapter 1

The engagement reception at the Sterling estate was bathed in bright, natural light that poured through the floor-to-ceiling windows. The cinematic clarity of the afternoon sun illuminated the grand hall without a single trace of a dull, yellow tint. Every surface gleamed with pristine elegance, from the polished marble floors to the vivid, towering floral arrangements that decorated the room in bursts of crimson and white. It was a celebration designed to showcase absolute power and limitless wealth. The guests, a mixed group of American elites and hardened syndicate members, mingled over champagne, their sharp American accents creating a steady, sophisticated hum of conversation.
Away from the center of the celebration, near a lavishly decorated reception table, the atmosphere was entirely devoid of warmth. Three-year-old Malik Sterling backed away, his small shoulders trembling. His warm, soft cocoa-brown skin was pale with genuine terror. Dressed impeccably in formal child’s clothing and polished dress shoes, Malik looked like a miniature prince of the empire, but right now, he was nothing more than cornered prey.
Looming over him was Evelyn Frost. At thirty years old, Darius’s fiancée was a striking vision of high-society beauty. She possessed pale, fair porcelain skin that contrasted sharply with her elegant, vivid sapphire formal gown. Diamonds dripped from her ears and encircled her wrist, catching the bright light with every movement. Yet, beneath the breathtaking exterior lay a cold, calculating cruelty that had finally snapped.
"You think you are so clever, sneaking around where you don't belong," Evelyn hissed, her voice a sharp, venomous whisper that barely carried over the ambient noise of the party.
Malik shook his head rapidly, his eyes wide and brimming with tears. He pointed nervously to his ear, where a small, custom-fitted hearing aid rested. He relied on it to navigate a world that was otherwise muffled and confusing.
Evelyn’s porcelain face twisted into a vicious scowl. With blinding speed, she reached down and forcefully yanked the delicate electronic device straight out of Malik’s ear.
"No!" Malik cried out, the sudden loss of sound disorienting him instantly.
Evelyn did not hesitate. She threw the expensive hearing aid violently to the polished marble ground. Raising her designer heel, she brought it down with devastating force, crushing the fragile device into sharp, jagged plastic splinters. The sickening crunch was lost beneath the music of the string quartet, but to Malik, the silence that followed was absolute and terrifying.
Malik recoiled instantly, his small back hitting the edge of the heavy reception table. He slid down, curling his arms defensively over his head, terrified that another strike was coming.

Evelyn leaned over him, her flawless face contorted into a mask of pure malice. She smiled down at the trembling child, a vicious, triumphant curve of her lips.
"You heard something you weren’t supposed to hear," Evelyn sneered, her words clipped and cruel. "And in this family, little boys who listen at doors don't get to keep their toys. You are going to learn your place today."
