Chapter 1

The grand ballroom of the Hayes family estate was bathed in brilliant, natural cinematic lighting, completely free of any artificial yellow tint. Towering floor-to-ceiling windows allowed the crisp afternoon sun to pour over the pristine white marble floor, illuminating the luxurious private Mafia wedding taking place. Wealthy American capos, their elegant wives, and sharp-eyed bodyguards mingled near the massive, flower-covered wedding arch. The air was thick with the scent of white roses and expensive champagne.

At the edge of the crowd, three-year-old Zariah Hayes wandered away from her nanny. Her warm cocoa-brown skin glowed perfectly against her elegant pastel wedding-guest dress and tiny white cardigan. She hummed happily, her little flats tapping softly against the marble as she approached a tall marble pedestal. Resting atop the pillar was a priceless, cobalt-blue antique porcelain vase.

"Look at the pretty flowers," Zariah whispered to herself, reaching out a tiny hand toward the pedestal’s base.

She took one step too close. Her shoulder accidentally bumped the heavy marble pillar.

The pedestal wobbled violently. The antique porcelain vase tipped past the point of no return, plummeting toward the floor. It hit the marble with an explosive, deafening crash, shattering into a thousand jagged pieces. The music instantly stopped.

Before the echoes of the crash could even fade, Caroline Mercer materialized from the crowd. Her pale, fair porcelain skin was flushed dark red with sudden, venomous fury. The diamonds on her fingers caught the light as she lunged forward, grabbing Zariah by the arm. Without a second of hesitation, Caroline delivered one vicious, open-handed slap across the little girl’s face.

Zariah spun sideways from the brutal force of the blow, dropping heavily onto the marble beside the broken porcelain.

"That vase was worth more than you!" Caroline screamed, her voice cracking with furious hysteria. "You stupid, careless little brat!"

Across the ballroom, the crowd parted instantly. Xavier Hayes stepped forward. His deep, rich ebony skin radiated a terrifying, quiet authority. He wore a tailored dark three-piece suit that seemed to absorb the light around him. Powerful, deeply masculine, and intimidating, he crossed the ballroom in three massive, purposeful strides, his polished leather shoes striking the floor like hammer blows.

Xavier knelt immediately, ignoring Caroline entirely. He lifted Zariah safely from the floor, his massive hands incredibly gentle, and placed her securely behind his legs.

"Daddy… I didn’t mean to break it," Zariah sobbed, her tiny hands clutching his tailored trousers, her warm cocoa-brown face marked with a bright red handprint.

"I know, baby," Xavier said, his voice a deep, soothing rumble. "You are safe now."

As Xavier looked down at the wreckage to inspect the danger, his sharp eyes caught something unnatural among the shards. Sliding out from the hollow base of the overturned pedestal was a sealed, yellowed envelope.

Caroline’s eyes followed his gaze. The furious flush instantly vanished from her pale face, leaving her completely ghostly. She suddenly went pale, her breath hitching in pure terror.
