Chapter 7

The secure suite was practically a fortress, built precisely for scenarios like this. Thick steel plating reinforced the walls, and the windows were lined with bulletproof glass. Xavier sat at the heavy mahogany desk in the corner of the room, plugging the small, metallic digital drive into an encrypted offline laptop.

Marcus stood by the door, his weapon at the low ready, keeping a watchful eye on the hallway security feed on a secondary monitor. On the sofa, Zariah had fallen asleep, the stress of the day and a full bowl of ice cream pulling her into peaceful dreams.

"The ballroom is secured, Boss," Marcus reported quietly. "Vincent locked down the surviving guests and has Julian and Caroline zip-tied in the center of the room. They didn't make it to the doors."

"Good," Xavier murmured, his eyes reflecting the blue light of the laptop screen. "Keep them there. I want them to sweat."

A prompt flashed on the screen, asking for an decryption key. Xavier reached into his pocket and pulled out the yellowed envelope. He flipped it over, analyzing the faded ink. At the very bottom of the ledger page, written in tiny script, was a sequence of twelve alphanumeric characters.

He typed the code in. The drive unlocked immediately.

"Let's see what you were selling, Julian," Xavier muttered.

A massive folder opened on the screen. It wasn't just security codes to the estate. It was thousands of files. Shipping manifests, political blackmail material, bank account routing numbers, and a highly detailed roster of every undercover operative Xavier had planted in the rival families across the Midwest.

"This is everything," Marcus said, stepping closer, his eyes wide in disbelief. "They weren't just plotting a coup. They were selling our entire syndicate's infrastructure to the Lucchese family. It's a complete hostile takeover."

"It gets worse," Xavier said, clicking on a sub-folder labeled 'Extraction Protocol'.

A single video file sat inside. Xavier pressed play. The video showed Julian and Caroline sitting in a dimly lit office, speaking directly into the camera.

"The drive will be delivered at the wedding," Julian’s recorded voice said, his ruddy skin looking pale in the video. "Once you have it, Hayes’s security grid will go blind for ten minutes. That's your window. Kill him. But the girl... the girl survives. Caroline will take custody of Zariah as her legal guardian. It gives us total control over the Hayes trust fund."

Xavier hit pause. The silence in the room was absolute, suffocating, and terrifyingly cold.

He looked over at his sleeping, three-year-old daughter. The innocence of her beautiful cocoa-brown face contrasted so sharply with the vile, greedy darkness that had surrounded her. They hadn't just plotted his death; they had plotted to enslave his daughter to secure their wealth.

"They were going to raise her," Xavier whispered, his voice trembling for the first time all day—not out of fear, but out of a wrath so profound it shook his very core.

"Boss," Marcus said softly, knowing exactly what was going through Xavier's mind. "Give me the word, and I will go back to the ballroom and execute them both right now."

May you like

Xavier slowly closed the laptop, pulling the digital drive free. He slid it carefully into his inside jacket pocket. He adjusted his suit, his deep ebony skin hardening into an unyielding mask of vengeance.

"No," Xavier said, his voice dropping to a lethal calm. "A quick bullet is far too merciful for what they planned. We are going back to the ballroom. And I am going to make them bleed."
