Chapter 1

The private maternity suite was flooded with bright, cinematic sunlight that poured through the floor-to-ceiling windows, casting a brilliant, almost blinding glow across the room. The video colors of the scene were exceptionally vivid, highlighting the pristine white linens, the vibrant pastel floral arrangements on the windowsill, and the cold, metallic gleam of the medical equipment. At the center of this luminous space was Naomi Brooks. At twenty-eight years old, she was a light-skinned African American woman whose beauty was as striking as a runway model or a classic Hollywood actress. She possessed a lovely oval face, softly sculpted cheekbones, large expressive dark brown eyes, and naturally full lips. Her thick, lustrous black curls were loosely gathered behind her head, spilling gracefully over the pillows. Yet, contrasting sharply with her delicate facial features and graceful appearance was the dark, ugly bruise visible on her cheek—a harsh testament to recent violence.
She wore a standard hospital gown, a plastic admission wristband, and a taped IV line on her hand. A gold wedding ring still gleamed on her finger. But the serene beauty of the bright room was utterly shattered by the violent struggle occurring at her bedside. Walter Sterling, a sixty-three-year-old White American man with fair, rosy skin, stood over her. Dressed impeccably in a tailored suit, crisp dress shirt, silk tie, and polished dress shoes, he was a portrait of ruthless authority. Walter was already gripping newborn Elijah’s swaddled body with both hands, his knuckles turning white as he aggressively wrenched the infant away from Naomi’s chest.
Elijah, a beautiful African American newborn with medium-brown skin, not too dark, was wrapped securely in a soft hospital swaddle. Naomi clamped one arm desperately around the baby and cried out, her voice a raw, agonizing sound. Her recent C-section incision flared with blinding pain, the physical trauma forcing her back into the pillows, draining the strength from her arms. Standing just behind Walter was Brandon Sterling. The thirty-six-year-old White American male, sharing the same fair, rosy skin as his father, wore a sharp suit and dress shoes. Brandon reached forward eagerly, his eyes locked onto the baby boy. Across the room, safe but ignored, Amelia Brooks—Elijah’s twin sister, sharing his medium-brown skin—began crying loudly from her swaddle inside the bassinet.
"You have no right to do this! He is my son! He stays with me!" Naomi screamed, her chest heaving as she fought against Walter’s iron grip.
Walter glared down at her, his expression furious and merciless. "Give him up. A boy belongs with a real family."
Walter finally tore Elijah free, keeping the baby fully supported in his large hands, then thrust him decisively into Brandon’s waiting arms. Naomi lunged after them, fueled by pure maternal desperation, but a searing spike of pain tore through her abdomen, stopping her cold. She fell back, gasping. Her free hand scrambled across the sheets and grabbed the red call controller to summon the nurses. Seeing this, Walter immediately slapped the device from her trembling fingers, sending it clattering onto the blanket.

"Put my son back in my arms," Naomi demanded, her voice hoarse, devastated, yet vibrating with a deep, unbreakable resolve.
"The boy is a Sterling heir," Brandon replied coldly. He stepped backward with Elijah, deliberately shielding the swaddled baby from Naomi’s view, wearing a thin, triumphant smile on his fair face. "He requires a legacy you could never provide."
