Chapter 9

Naomi kicked the heavy double doors open, the wood crashing violently against the walls. The nursery was a vision of extreme, cinematic opulence, decorated in bright, vivid colors of royal blue and gold. The natural sunlight poured over towering shelves of expensive toys and a massive, ornate wooden crib in the center of the room.
Standing beside a changing table, holding the swaddled newborn, was Patricia Sterling.
The sixty-one-year-old matriarch wore an immaculate blouse and skirt, her fair, rosy skin adorned with heavy pearl jewelry. She froze, her eyes widening in absolute shock as she saw the battered, beautiful African American woman standing in the doorway with a gun leveled directly at her chest.
"Put him down," Naomi ordered, her voice echoing with devastating, terrifying authority.
Patricia took a step back, instinctively pulling the baby closer to her chest. Elijah, with his beautiful medium-brown skin, was wrapped securely in a pristine white designer swaddle, completely oblivious to the lethal standoff.
"You are insane," Patricia breathed, her American accent trembling, though she tried desperately to maintain her aristocratic superiority. "How did you get in here? Do you have any idea what Walter will do to you for pointing a weapon at me?"
"I don't care about Walter," Naomi replied, stepping fully into the bright, colorful nursery. Her thick, lustrous black curls framed her lovely oval face, the ugly bruise on her cheek a stark reminder of the violence they had already inflicted upon her. "I am walking out of this house with my son. If you try to stop me, Patricia, I will drop you where you stand. Put him in the crib."
Patricia looked at the cold, unblinking determination in Naomi's large, expressive dark brown eyes. She slowly lowered her arms, gently placing the swaddled newborn onto the soft mattress of the changing table.
"You are making a terrible mistake, Naomi," Patricia attempted to negotiate, her voice taking on a manipulative, pleading tone. "You cannot give him the life we can. Look around you! He will inherit billions! He will have the finest education, the greatest opportunities in the world. You are a widow with nothing. If you take him, you are condemning him to a life of poverty and struggle."
"I am saving him from a family of monsters," Naomi spat, keeping the gun trained on Patricia as she quickly crossed the room.
Naomi reached the changing table. The moment her hand brushed against Elijah’s warm, swaddled body, a profound, overwhelming wave of emotion crashed over her. Tears blurred her vision as she scooped her newborn son into her left arm, pressing him securely against her chest. The physical pain of her C-section vanished entirely, replaced by the sheer, triumphant adrenaline of reclaiming her child.
"You won't make it to the front gates," Patricia warned, her rosy face twisting into an ugly sneer of contempt. "Brandon has security on every floor."

"Then I suggest you walk in front of me," Naomi ordered, grabbing Patricia roughly by the back of her expensive blouse and pressing the gun directly into her spine. "You are my insurance policy. Move."
With her newborn son finally back in her arms and the Sterling matriarch held hostage at gunpoint, Naomi marched out of the bright, colorful nursery. The cinematic climax was approaching. She had reclaimed Elijah, but the fortress of the Sterling estate still stood between her and absolute freedom.
