Chapter 10

The grand foyer of the Sterling estate was a masterpiece of architectural brilliance, bathed in bright, cinematic light pouring from the massive crystal chandelier overhead. The vibrant colors of the floral arrangements lining the marble staircase contrasted sharply with the deadly, high-tension standoff unfolding at the base of the steps.
Naomi descended the grand staircase slowly, her lovely oval face set in a mask of absolute defiance. In her left arm, she held Elijah tightly against her chest, the baby’s medium-brown skin glowing warmly against the bright white swaddle. In her right hand, she held the heavy black handgun pressed firmly against the spine of Patricia Sterling, using the terrified, rosy-skinned matriarch as a human shield.
But as they reached the final landing, the path to the front doors was abruptly blocked.
Walter Sterling stood at the base of the stairs, flanked by Brandon and four massive, heavily armed White American bodyguards. Walter’s tailored suit was immaculate, his fair, rosy skin flushed with a dark, terrifying fury. Brandon stood beside him, the triumphant smile from the hospital completely gone, replaced by a look of humiliated, murderous rage.
"Let my wife go, Naomi," Walter demanded, his American accent echoing loudly in the cavernous, brightly lit foyer. "You have made your point. You are a resilient woman. But you are vastly outmatched. This ends now."
"It ends when I walk out that front door," Naomi countered, her voice ringing clear and strong. The Hollywood-actress beauty she possessed was now terrifying, framed by the dark bruise on her cheek and the lethal weapon in her hand. "Tell your men to drop their guns, Walter. Or Patricia dies on your marble floor."
"She won't pull the trigger, Dad," Brandon sneered, stepping forward, his dress shoes clicking against the stone. "She doesn't have the stomach for it. She's just a frightened little girl trying to play tough."
"Try me, Brandon," Naomi warned, her large, expressive dark brown eyes locking onto his. She pressed the barrel harder into Patricia's back, causing the older woman to let out a sharp, terrified gasp. "You ripped my son from my chest while I was bleeding in a hospital bed. You think I won't kill to protect him now?"
The cinematic tension in the bright, colorful foyer was suffocating. The bodyguards kept their weapons trained on Naomi, waiting for Walter to give the command to fire. Walter stared at the beautiful, battered African American woman, calculating his next move. He knew the scandal of a shootout in his foyer during a high-profile garden gala would ruin the Sterling legacy forever.
Suddenly, the heavy mahogany front doors behind Walter burst open.
Marcus sprinted into the foyer, holding an automatic rifle leveled directly at Walter’s back. Slung across Marcus's chest in a secure tactical baby carrier was Amelia, sleeping soundly through the chaos.
"Drop the weapons! Now!" Marcus roared, his voice booming like thunder.
Walter turned, his eyes widening in shock as he realized he was caught in a crossfire. Brandon reached instinctively for the gun tucked inside his jacket.
"Don't do it, Brandon!" Naomi screamed, raising her handgun away from Patricia and aiming it squarely at Brandon's chest.
The bright video colors of the foyer seemed to freeze in time. The standoff was absolute. A grieving, battered mother and a loyal friend stood against an empire of infinite wealth and corruption. The safety on Brandon's weapon clicked audibly in the silent, luminous room.

Naomi tightened her finger on the trigger, her thick, lustrous black curls framing her fierce, determined face. The battle for the Sterling heir had reached its breaking point, and only one family would walk out of the bright, cinematic light alive.
