Chapter 5

The loading dock of the hospital was awash in bright, harsh fluorescent lighting, casting stark, cinematic shadows against the concrete walls. Naomi stood hidden behind a stack of blue industrial laundry carts, clutching Amelia tightly to her chest. Her heart pounded a frantic rhythm against her ribs, every breath sending a sharp spike of agony through her healing C-section incision. The vivid, bright colors of the hospital's exterior signage flashed in the distance, a surreal backdrop to her desperate escape.
A sleek, black SUV pulled aggressively into the loading bay, its tires screeching against the concrete. The tinted window rolled down, revealing Marcus. He was a rugged, broad-shouldered man with a sharp, alert gaze.
"Naomi! Get in!" Marcus yelled over the hum of the powerful engine.
Naomi broke from her cover, moving as fast as her battered body would allow. She yanked the heavy passenger door open and climbed inside, securing Amelia in the back seat before collapsing into the front. Marcus slammed his foot on the gas, and the SUV rocketed away from the hospital, merging seamlessly into the bright, colorful traffic of the city.
"Are you okay? You look like you're going to pass out," Marcus said, glancing at her pale, lovely oval face and the dark, ugly bruise marring her cheek.
"I'm fine," Naomi lied, gritting her teeth against the pain. Her thick, lustrous black curls fell loosely around her shoulders. "Where are we going?"
"I have a safe house across town. It's off the grid. The Sterlings won't find it," Marcus assured her, his hands gripping the steering wheel tightly. "Tell me exactly what happened."
Naomi recounted the horror of the delivery room. She described Walter’s furious, merciless face, Brandon’s triumphant smile, and the cold, aristocratic cruelty of Patricia and Vanessa. Her naturally full lips trembled as she repeated Walter's words: “A boy belongs with a real family.”
"They want the heir," Marcus growled, his American accent thick with disgust. "Walter built an empire, but he's old traditional money. He believes the Sterling legacy can only be passed down through a male bloodline. When David changed his name to Brooks and walked away, Walter lost his only successor. With David gone, Brandon is the only male left, but Brandon is sterile. He can't have kids. That's why they needed your son."
"They erased him from the hospital records, Marcus," Naomi said, her large, dark brown eyes reflecting the passing city lights. "Vanessa told me the police chief plays golf with Walter. We can't fight them in a courtroom. They own the judge, the jury, and the evidence."
"She's right," Marcus admitted grimly. "Walter Sterling has enough money to rewrite reality. If you walk into a police station, they'll arrest you for trespassing and hand Amelia over to child protective services before you even finish your statement."
"Then we don't use the police," Naomi stated, her voice dropping to a low, lethal register. The grace and beauty of a Hollywood actress suddenly shifted into the cold, calculated demeanor of a mother preparing for war. "We don't use a courtroom. We go to their house, and we take him back."

Marcus looked at her, his eyes widening in shock. "Naomi, the Sterling estate is a fortress. They have armed private security, gated perimeters, and surveillance on every corner. You just had major surgery. You can barely walk."
"I don't care if I bleed out on their marble floors, Marcus," Naomi replied fiercely, turning her gaze forward into the bright, cinematic lights of the city. "Elijah is my son. And I am going to tear their entire world apart to get him back."
