Chapter 2

The brilliant, warm sunlight illuminating the hospital suite felt entirely disconnected from the cold, suffocating terror gripping Naomi’s heart. The bright colors of the room—the cheerful yellow curtains, the vibrant blue blankets, and the stark white walls—seemed to mock the devastating reality of her newborn son being stolen right before her eyes. As Brandon stepped further back into the shadows of the doorway, clutching little Elijah to his chest, two more figures emerged into the cinematic light of the room.

Patricia Sterling, a sixty-one-year-old White American woman with flawless, fair, rosy skin, stepped forward. She was dressed in an immaculate silk blouse and a tailored skirt, her neck and wrists adorned with heavy, expensive jewelry. Her high heels clicked sharply against the linoleum floor, a rhythmic sound of absolute entitlement. Beside her stood Vanessa Sterling. At thirty-four years old, Vanessa mirrored her mother’s fair, rosy complexion and icy demeanor. She wore a high-end designer dress, glittering jewelry, and stilettos that elevated her imposing stature.

"You should be grateful we are allowing you to keep the girl," Patricia stated, her American accent dripping with aristocratic disdain. She glanced dismissively toward the bassinet where little Amelia continued to wail. "She is of absolutely no use to the Sterling estate. But the boy carries my late son’s blood. He belongs to us."

"David would never have allowed this," Naomi choked out, her large, expressive dark brown eyes brimming with furious tears. She pressed a hand against her abdomen, trying to physically hold her surgical wound together. "He hated you! He changed his name to get away from your family!"

"David was a confused, rebellious boy who died before he could fulfill his obligations to his father's company," Walter interjected, adjusting his silk tie with a practiced, terrifying calm. "But his death does not negate the necessity of a male heir. Brandon will raise the boy as his own. He will be given the best education, the finest life. Things a widowed woman of your... background... could never dream of affording."

"I will go to the police," Naomi threatened, her naturally full lips trembling with rage. "I will tell them you kidnapped my child! I will scream until every doctor and nurse in this building comes running!"

Vanessa let out a soft, mocking laugh, her rosy cheeks lifting in a cruel smile. "Do you really think we would walk into a hospital and take a child if we hadn't already paid for the privilege, Naomi? This entire wing has been cleared. The doctors are on our payroll. The police chief plays golf with my father every Sunday. You are completely invisible."

"Please," Naomi begged, the fight momentarily draining from her as the sheer magnitude of their power crashed over her. She looked at Brandon, who was gently rocking the swaddled infant. "Brandon, please. He needs his mother. He needs his sister."

"He needs a father," Brandon replied, his thin smile unwavering. "And since my brother is dead, I will happily step in. Enjoy your daughter, Naomi. If you ever try to contact us, or if you ever approach our estate, I will personally ensure child services takes the girl away from you as well."

Walter turned toward the door, gesturing for his family to follow. "We are leaving. Let her rest. She has a lot of grieving to do."

As the four members of the Sterling family walked out of the bright, airy room with her newborn son, Naomi let out a guttural, heartbroken scream. She tried to throw her legs over the side of the hospital bed, but the blinding, agonizing pain of her postpartum incision forced her back down, leaving her weeping helplessly as the heavy wooden door clicked shut.
