Chapter 4

The silence in the grand hall was absolute and suffocating. The bright, cinematic video colors of the floral arrangements and the guests' formal wear stood in stark contrast to the dark, violent reality of the mafia empire that had just been exposed. Darius remained perfectly positioned in front of his son, a living, breathing shield of muscle and tailored wool.

He did not look at Andre. He did not look at the bodyguards. His cold, sharp, intimidating eyes were locked entirely on the woman gasping for air on the reception sofa.

Darius smoothed the lapels of his suit jacket. He took a slow, deliberate breath, ensuring his heart rate remained perfectly steady. He was a man who ruled through calculated terror, not chaotic rage.

"Sarah," Darius said. He spoke slowly, with controlled pauses between words. He kept his volume incredibly low, forcing the entire room to strain to hear him. It made his voice infinitely more dangerous. "Bring the spare. Put it in his ear."

Sarah, recovering from the hard shove, nodded quickly. She knelt beside the terrified three-year-old, pulling the spare hearing aid from her apron and gently fitting it into Malik’s ear. "There you go, sweet boy. You're okay."

Darius kept Malik safely behind his legs, stepping just an inch closer to the sofa where his fiancée was hyperventilating. Evelyn pushed herself up on trembling arms, her pale porcelain skin looking like fragile, cracked glass.

"Darius... please," Evelyn whimpered, her voice a pathetic shadow of the vicious tone she had used mere moments ago. "You don't understand. He is just a child. He doesn't know what he's talking about. You can't believe him over me."

Darius tilted his head slightly, a few loose strands of his thick, dark wavy hair falling across his forehead. The charming, romantic look of his face was completely at odds with the executioner's stare in his eyes.

"I have not asked him. What he heard," Darius stated, the measured cadence of his words sending a visible shiver down Evelyn's spine.

He slowly clasped his hands in front of him, the refined, sharp tattoos on his knuckles flexing under the bright lights.

"You broke his device. Because you believed it would buy you silence," Darius continued, his volume remaining lethally low. "You assaulted the heir to this family. In front of my entire organization."

Evelyn opened her mouth, her eyes darting frantically toward the bar where Andre was currently surrounded by the bodyguards. It was a brief, desperate glance, but to a veteran boss like Darius, it was a full confession.

Darius leaned forward ever so slightly.

"Now," Darius said, dead calm, the absolute lack of emotion in his voice signaling the end of her life as she knew it. "Let's talk about what he heard. What scared you, Evelyn?"

Evelyn's face became genuinely, profoundly frightened. The arrogant, untouchable fiancée vanished, leaving only a terrified woman staring into the abyss of her own making.
