Chapter 2

Across the vast, brilliantly lit reception hall, Darius Sterling felt the shift in the room's energy before he even saw the commotion. At thirty-three, the head of the Sterling syndicate possessed the instincts of an apex predator. Darius was a breathtakingly handsome man, possessing the striking, masculine allure of a movie star. His deep, rich mahogany skin was absolutely flawless under the natural, cinematic lighting. His thick, slightly wavy dark hair was naturally slicked back, though a few loose strands fell effortlessly over his forehead, lending him a charming, romantic look that masked his lethal nature.
He wore a dark, impeccably tailored suit, the dress shirt unbuttoned boldly at the chest to reveal a glimpse of the refined, artistic tattoos that crawled up his neck. The sharp, spaced-out designs were moderate and neatly placed, cultivating an incredibly attractive, yet fundamentally dangerous presence. His angular face, high-bridged nose, and sharply defined jawline were shadowed by extremely short, neatly trimmed stubble.
But it was his cold, sharp, intimidating eyes that stopped men dead in their tracks. And right now, those eyes were locked onto the far side of the room.
Darius saw Evelyn standing over his son. He saw the crushed plastic on the marble floor.
He moved instantly. Darius crossed the crowded reception with long, powerful strides. He did not run, but his sheer, terrifying presence caused the crowd of chatting guests and capos to part like the Red Sea. The air in the room grew heavy and suffocating as the Mafia boss approached the table.
Evelyn did not even have time to register his arrival before a heavy, tattooed hand clamped onto her shoulder.
With effortless, terrifying strength, Darius tore Evelyn away from the table, spinning her around and shoving her roughly to the side. Her high heels skidded on the marble, her pale porcelain face instantly draining of color as she looked up into the freezing, murderous gaze of her fiancé.
Darius did not say a word to her. He immediately knelt down, the fabric of his expensive suit pulling tight across his broad shoulders, and reached for his son.
"Malik," Darius murmured, his voice incredibly low, yet vibrating with absolute authority.
He pulled the three-year-old safely beside him, shielding the boy’s small, cocoa-brown body with his own massive frame. Malik threw his arms around his father's neck, burying his face in the unbuttoned collar of Darius’s shirt.
"Dad," Malik sobbed, his voice cracking with profound distress. He pointed a trembling, tiny finger at the crushed pieces of his hearing aid scattered on the floor, and then pointed directly at the pale, trembling woman in the sapphire gown.

The tears streamed down Malik's face, his words stumbling out in a rush of terrified grief. "Dad… She broke it after I heard everything."
Darius went perfectly, dangerously still. The artistic tattoos on his hands flexed as he gently rubbed his son's back. The words hung in the bright, clear air of the reception hall, a devastating revelation that turned the engagement celebration into a powder keg.
