Chapter 8

The chaotic destruction in the brightly lit backstage area stood in stark, terrifying contrast to the absolute, unyielding stillness of Roland. He stood in the center of the room, his chest rising and falling with slow, perfectly controlled breaths. His midnight-blue velvet tuxedo remained flawlessly intact. He gently adjusted his grip on Zuri, ensuring the little girl was completely shielded from the violent wreckage surrounding them.
"I've got you, Zuri. You are safe," Roland murmured, his deep voice thick with a warm, protective love that he reserved exclusively for her.
He slowly turned his head. His cold, sharp, intimidating eyes swept past the groaning bodies of Scarlett and Harrison, completely dismissing their existence. His gaze locked entirely onto his adopted son.
Nathan was still standing exactly where he had been when the violence erupted. The thirty-seven-year-old man was trembling so violently that his crisp white dinner jacket shook. His fair, rosy skin was slick with cold, panicked sweat. He looked at his father, genuine, unadulterated terror shining in his eyes. He realized that the protection of the family name, the wealth, and the power he had so desperately craved were all gone, evaporated in the span of a three-year-old's tears.
Roland took one slow, deliberate step toward him. The polished black leather of his loafers made a soft, ominous sound against the carpet.
The silence in the room stretched until it felt as though the very air might shatter. The wealthy guests pressed themselves flat against the walls, terrified to even draw breath.
Roland looked directly at Nathan. The profound, heartbreaking disappointment in the patriarch's eyes was infinitely more devastating than any physical blow.
"You hid... my granddaughter," Roland said.
His voice was dead calm. He spoke incredibly slowly, keeping his volume terrifyingly low, yet the measured cadence echoed clearly across the silent room. Every word sounded cold, sharp, and dripping with an apocalyptic finality.
"To impress... this woman," Roland continued, gesturing slightly toward the pile of backdrop fabric where Scarlett lay weeping.
Nathan opened his mouth, desperately trying to formulate an excuse, to beg for his life, but his throat was completely paralyzed by fear.
"You denied your own blood," Roland whispered, the ultimate, unforgivable sin in their world hanging heavily in the bright, cinematic light. He tilted his head slightly, his gaze piercing straight through to Nathan's cowardly soul.

"You're finished," Roland declared.
The absolute finality in his tone left no room for negotiation, no hope for redemption. Nathan’s face became a portrait of pure, paralyzing fright. The color drained entirely from his lips. He understood the true, horrific implication of those words. He was not just being disowned; he was being erased from the syndicate, stripped of all protection in a world where weakness was an immediate death sentence.
