Chapter 4

The oppressive silence of the grand living room was broken only by the rhythmic, ragged sounds of Lila’s breathing as it slowly began to ease. The bright, cinematic colors of the estate felt like a surreal backdrop to the intense, localized trauma unfolding on the floor. Adrian held his daughter tight against his chest, his large hand rubbing her back in slow, soothing circles. The tension in his broad, powerful shoulders refused to dissipate, his body still coiled like a spring ready to snap.
A few feet away, Theresa pushed herself up onto her elbows. Her elegant silk blouse was wrinkled, and the slap had left a vibrant, swelling mark across her fair, rosy cheek. She held a hand to her face, her eyes burning with a toxic, humiliated fury.
Walter Mercer broke through the crowd of paralyzed guests, his face pale with shock. "Adrian! Have you lost your mind? You struck your sister!"
Adrian did not look at the older man. His deep-set dark eyes remained locked onto his daughter's face, ensuring the color was returning to her medium-brown skin.
"She is not my sister," Adrian replied, his voice a low, vibrating rumble that carried a chilling, lethal edge. "She is a monster. She was suffocating my child."
"It was a joke!" Theresa yelled from the floor, scrambling to her feet. She refused to show even a single ounce of remorse for what she had done. Her arrogance completely blinded her to the danger she was still in. She smoothed her trousers, glaring down at the man kneeling on the floor. "The child is spoiled, Adrian! She uses that little plastic toy as a crutch to get attention!"
Adrian’s head snapped up. The look in his eyes was so profoundly intimidating, so cold and sharp, that several guests instinctively took a step backward.
"A crutch," Adrian repeated, his voice dangerously soft.
"Yes, a crutch!" Theresa sneered, her voice dripping with cruel, dismissive venom. "She needs to learn how to deal with a little discomfort. You won't always be around to rescue her. She better get used to going without it."
The sheer, psychopathic audacity of her statement hung in the bright, sunlit air. To openly advocate for the torture and potential death of a four-year-old child was a bridge too far, even for the notoriously cutthroat Mercer family.
"Theresa, shut your mouth," Walter hissed, finally realizing the catastrophic magnitude of what his daughter had just confessed to. He looked at Adrian, raising his hands in a placating gesture. "Adrian, please. She is upset. She doesn't mean what she is saying."
"She means exactly what she is saying," Adrian said slowly.
He gently lifted Lila into his arms, standing up to his full, commanding height. The athletic, powerful physique of the thirty-five-year-old man completely dominated the space. He held his daughter securely against his chest, her small arms wrapped tightly around his neck.
"You believe," Adrian said, turning his entire body to face Theresa, "that my daughter... needs to learn discomfort."

"I am trying to prepare her for the real world!" Theresa argued, completely unhinged by the public humiliation of the slap. "This family doesn't tolerate weakness, Adrian! You know that better than anyone!"
Adrian took one slow, deliberate step toward her. The air in the room seemed to freeze. "The real world... is going to seem like a paradise... compared to what I am going to do to you."
