Chapter 5

The violent promise hung in the air, heavy and absolute. Theresa took a sudden, involuntary step backward, the bravado finally cracking under the sheer, unadulterated menace radiating from Adrian. The bright, vivid lighting of the room cast sharp shadows across his striking, masculine face. His neatly groomed beard and low taper fade contrasted with the wild, untamed fury burning in his dark eyes.

"Adrian, let's step into my office," Walter pleaded, his voice taking on a desperate, commanding tone. "We are going to settle this like civilized adults. You are frightening the guests. You are frightening the child."

"The only thing frightening my child is the woman standing next to you," Adrian replied coldly.

He shifted his attention back to Lila. The four-year-old’s breathing had finally begun to stabilize. The high-pitched wheezing had faded, replaced by soft, exhausted sighs. The healthy, glowing tone had returned to her medium-brown skin. She rested her head heavily against Adrian’s shoulder, utterly drained by the terrifying ordeal.

"Are you okay, Lila?" Adrian whispered, his deep voice softening into a reservoir of profound, protective love. "Does your chest still hurt?"

Lila shook her head slowly, her bright, innocent eyes looking around the room before settling on her father's face. She looked incredibly small against his broad, athletic frame. She reached up with a tiny, trembling hand and tightly gripped the fabric of his fitted charcoal sleeve.

Adrian felt the urgency in her tiny grip. He leaned his head down, pressing his ear close to her lips so she wouldn't have to strain her recovering lungs to speak.

"What is it, baby?" Adrian asked gently. "Tell Daddy."

Lila swallowed hard, her eyes darting nervously toward Theresa, who was still standing a few feet away, nursing her bruised cheek. The little girl pulled Adrian’s ear even closer, her breath warm against his skin.

"Aunt Theresa takes it every time you leave," Lila whispered.

Her voice was a frightened, fragile breath, but the words slammed into Adrian’s brain with the devastating kinetic force of a freight train.

Adrian’s entire body went rigid. The muscles in his sharply defined jawline locked into stone. His powerful heart missed a beat, then surged with a sudden, overwhelming torrent of dark, violent adrenaline.

"Every time I leave?" Adrian repeated, his voice barely audible, staring blankly at the wall as his mind rapidly processed the horrifying implication.

Lila nodded, a tear slipping down her cheek. "When you go to the big meetings. She takes the pouch. She says I have to practice holding my breath. I told her it hurts, but she laughs at me, Daddy."

The revelation was a paradigm shift. This wasn't an isolated incident of cruelty. This wasn't a sudden lapse in judgment. This was a systematic, prolonged campaign of physical and psychological torture against a defenseless four-year-old. His adoptive sister had been deliberately suffocating his child for months, using the child's life-saving medication as an instrument of terror.

Adrian slowly turned his head. His cold, intimidating eyes locked onto Theresa. The look on his face was no longer just anger; it was an apocalyptic, blood-chilling vow of total destruction. The civil, professional man had officially left the building.
