Chapter 12

We dismantled the nursery at the old estate.

Margaret heard about it and came downstairs before the workers finished.

“You’re destroying his room.”

“No.”

I looked around.

“I’m destroying your plan.”

The crib went first.

Not thrown away.

Donated.

The embroidered clothes too.

The Moretti crest above the wall came down.

Margaret watched like we were removing pieces of her body.

Maybe we were.

The empty silver frame remained on the dresser.

I picked it up.

“Why was this empty?”

She did not answer.

I already knew.

The first photograph placed there was supposed to be my son.

Alone.

Symbol before person.

I handed the frame to Antonio.

“Take it.”

Margaret whispered:

“What are you going to tell him about me?”

The question surprised me.

Not what will you do to me.

What will he know?

“Truth appropriate to his age.”

She looked afraid.

Interesting.

“You’ll poison him against me.”

“No.”

I thought about it.

“I’m not going to teach my son hate as inheritance.”

Her expression softened slightly.

Too soon.

“But I’m also not going to teach him that protecting family means pretending harm didn’t happen.”

The softness vanished.

Good.

Balanced truth rarely satisfies people who want absolution.

She looked toward the dismantled room.

“I wanted him to know where he came from.”

“So do I.”

“Then why remove everything?”

“Because where he comes from is bigger than this house.”

Emma.

Linda.

Me.

Even Margaret, someday, if she learned to exist without owning access.

Moretti history could be part of my son.

It would not be his cage.

That evening I brought the empty frame home.

Emma raised an eyebrow.

“You kept something?”

“Maybe.”

I placed a photograph inside.

Not the baby.

All three of us.

Emma in bed, exhausted, laughing.

Me looking terrible.

Our son asleep between us.

Linda had taken it the morning after we came home.

Messy.

Unposed.

Perfect.

I placed the frame in our living room.

No crest.

No inscription.

May you like

Just family.

That was enough.
