Chapter 11

Luca did not ask Alessandra to forgive him.
That saved him from making the night worse.
He asked one thing.
“Can we know?”
Alessandra looked at him.
“Tobin?”
“Yes.”
Her expression hardened.
“You want certainty now.”
“I deserve that.”
“No.”
The word stopped him.
“You don’t.”
Silence.
Alessandra continued.
“Tobin does.”
Luca lowered his head.
“You’re right.”
That answer mattered.
Not enough.
But it mattered.
A private physician arrived later that night.
No ceremony.
No family audience.
A simple cheek swab from Luca.
One from Tobin, after Alessandra explained in child-sized terms that the doctor was checking whether Luca was part of his biological family.
Tobin frowned.
“Like family puzzle?”
Alessandra smiled faintly.
“Yes.”
He nodded.
“Okay.”
Then held up the paper lion.
“Can he keep this?”
Luca looked toward Alessandra.
She let Tobin answer his own question.
The boy walked over.
Put the lion in Luca’s hand.
“Don’t squish.”
Luca’s throat tightened.
“I won’t.”
Vanessa watched from across the room.
She laughed softly.
“Beautiful.”
Everyone turned.
She had refused to leave.
Still wearing Luca’s engagement ring.
Still standing as if the relationship had not already died.
“A little family reunion built on a saliva test.”
Alessandra looked at her.
Vanessa smiled.
“You really think this ends with Luca crying and calling himself Daddy?”
“No.”
Alessandra’s voice was calm.
“I think it ends with you learning that his mistakes no longer protect you.”
Vanessa’s eyes narrowed.
“You still think you won.”
Alessandra almost smiled.
“I didn’t come to win Luca.”
That finally hit Vanessa where insults had failed.
For years she had imagined Alessandra as competition.
Alessandra no longer wanted the prize.
Vanessa’s face hardened.
“Then why are you here?”
Alessandra looked around at the capos standing behind her.
“Because someone wanted to know who would stand when I walked into the room.”
Her gaze shifted to Ethan.
“And now I know too.”
Ethan’s expression changed.
The loyalty test had reversed.
Several captains who had once worked closely with him had chosen Alessandra.
Not Luca.
Not Vanessa.
Her.
Ethan laughed.
“You think a restaurant stunt makes you a boss?”
One capo answered.
“No.”
Everyone turned.
He looked at Alessandra.
“Five years did.”
Ethan’s smile disappeared.
Another man spoke.
“She rebuilt Cicero after the Caruso split.”
Another:
“She ended the South Side war without losing one of our crews.”
Another:
“She paid every widow when the old Vescari leadership vanished.”
Luca listened.
He had known none of it.
Alessandra had not inherited power.
She had become useful.
Then necessary.
Then feared.
Vanessa stared at her.
The contempt in her voice sharpened.
“So that’s it?”
“You got rejected and decided to become a man?”
The room froze.
Alessandra looked at her.
Vanessa smiled.
“What?”
“You wear his kind of suit.”
“You surround yourself with killers.”
“You make everybody wait for permission to breathe.”
Her eyes swept over Alessandra.
“But take away the ring and the bodyguards and you’re still the same woman Luca left because she couldn’t keep him.”
Alessandra stepped closer.
“No.”
Vanessa held her ground.
“What changed?”
Alessandra’s voice stayed low.
“I stopped measuring my worth by whether a Moretti wanted me.”
That landed.
Vanessa’s eyes flickered.
Then Luca removed his engagement ring from her finger.
No drama.
No slap.
He simply took her hand and slid it free.
Vanessa froze.
“What are you doing?”
“Ending this.”
She laughed.
“You don’t end me because she came back.”
“No.”
Luca looked at her.
“I end this because you helped steal four years from my son.”
Vanessa’s face twisted.
Then she smiled.
Cruel again.
“You still don’t know he’s yours.”
Luca’s eyes hardened.
She leaned closer.
“And if he isn’t?”
Silence.
“What then?”
Luca looked toward Tobin.
Then back at her.
“I still know what you did.”
For the first time, Vanessa had no answer.
Then the doctor’s phone rang.
He listened.
Looked at Alessandra.
Then Luca.
May you like
“The preliminary result is clear.”
Tobin was Luca’s biological son.
