Chapter 3

Vincent had shown Claire proof.

Fake proof.

That was why she believed him.

Photographs of me entering a family estate with another woman.

A ring.

A dinner seating chart.

Statements from two old Bellrose capos saying my marriage had been arranged.

None of it meant what Vincent claimed.

The woman was my cousin’s fiancée.

The ring belonged to my mother.

The dinner had been a council gathering.

But taken together?

Enough.

Especially when Claire was eight months pregnant and already frightened of my world.

“He told me you were going to deny the baby.”

My stomach turned.

“I would never—”

“I know that now.”

Again.

Now.

Claire had lived four years inside something I understood in fifteen minutes.

That difference mattered.

“What happened after Vincent left?”

“He came back with Janice.”

I frowned.

So Janice had always been part of it.

Not the architect.

The keeper.

“She wasn’t a supervisor then.”

“What was she?”

“A woman who worked for one of Vincent’s cleaning companies.”

The irony was ugly.

He used service staff because powerful people rarely notice the cleaners entering and leaving buildings.

Claire continued.

Vincent offered her money.

A new identity.

A place outside the city.

If she disappeared quietly.

“What if you refused?”

Claire’s face changed.

“He asked me whether I wanted my daughter born into a war.”

Threat without saying threat.

Elegant.

Cowardly.

Same method my family used often.

Let imagination finish the violence.

I looked at Ella sleeping.

“What did you do?”

“I left.”

The words hurt anyway.

Not because I blamed her.

Because I finally understood what fear had replaced.

Us.

She continued.

Ella was born under the Bellrose name because Claire refused to erase that much.

Then Vincent discovered it.

He forced the hospital record changed in every copy he could reach.

One wristband survived.

The one in the envelope.

“Why?”

Claire looked at me.

“A nurse kept it.”

“Who?”

“Margaret Shaw.”

I knew the name.

She had been my mother’s nurse years earlier.

“How did it get into my office?”

Claire shook her head.

“I don’t know.”

That was real.

Janice knew.

I could see it already.

“What about Sophie?”

Claire looked away.

Different silence.

“Dominic…”

“What?”

Her hand moved to her stomach instinctively, though the baby was ten months old now.

“Sophie was not part of Vincent’s original plan.”

My heart changed rhythm.

I understood before she finished.

“Mine?”

Claire started crying.

“Yes.”

The room became very quiet.

Two daughters.

Not one.

I had missed both.

“How?”

She laughed through tears.

“You really want that explained?”

For the first time that night, I almost smiled.

It disappeared quickly.

Claire continued.

“You found me once.”

My chest tightened.

“When?”

“Two years ago.”

I stared.

“No.”

“Yes.”

May you like

She looked at me.

“You just didn’t know it was me.”
