Chapter 15

Sabine apologized to Faye eighteen months after the reception.

Not because I ordered it.

Faye agreed only after asking June whether she wanted Sabine nearby.

June said:

“Who?”

Excellent.

Children protect themselves through irrelevance.

The meeting happened in a small café.

I was not there.

Faye told me later.

Sabine said:

“I’m sorry I hit you.”

More.

“I’m sorry I threatened your daughter’s food.”

More.

“I hired you because I wanted to watch Lucien through you.”

There.

“And I treated your fear like proof I still had control.”

Better.

Faye asked:

“Why did the song scare you so much?”

Sabine answered:

“Because it meant Lucien had found a way around me.”

Honest.

The melody represented direct connection.

The thing Sabine had spent ten years preventing.

Faye did not forgive her completely.

She did say:

“Don’t ever use a child’s dinner to frighten a mother again.”

Sabine nodded.

No defense.

Later she began volunteering?

No.

Too neat.

Instead she took a small job managing events for an independent art foundation.

No Montclair authority.

No staff beholden to her family name.

Ordinary accountability.

She hated it at first.

Then apparently became good.

I heard through others.

We spoke occasionally.

Birthday.

Christmas.

Short.

She asked about Lucien.

I never answered for him.

“Call him.”

Sometimes he picked up.

Sometimes not.

Her old power came from being necessary between people.

Now she had to build separate relationships from zero.

Hard.

Healthy.

One evening Lucien told me:

“She asked what I wanted for my birthday.”

“What did you say?”

“Nothing.”

“And?”

“She sent nothing.”

May you like

We both laughed.

Progress can be measured by gifts not sent.
