Chapter 15

Ismeralda wrote Roland a letter.
He did not open it for six months.
Then did.
His choice.
He told me only one line.
I made your loyalty look like a threat because I could not earn it fast enough.
Good sentence.
He did not answer.
Also good.
Later she requested to meet him.
He said no.
Another year passed.
Then yes.
They met in a public hotel lounge.
Adelise nearby.
Not hovering.
Present.
Roland asked one question:
“When did you stop telling yourself I might come back?”
Ismeralda answered:
“When I realized I hoped you wouldn’t.”
There.
That was the truth he needed.
Not because she wanted him dead.
Because his return threatened her future.
That hope mattered.
She admitted it.
Roland appreciated honesty.
Did not forgive her.
He told her:
“You wanted respect without enduring distrust.”
She nodded.
“I know.”
“Everyone who enters a family earns something slowly.”
Another nod.
“Your mistake was thinking slow meant never.”
That struck me when he repeated it later.
Ismeralda had reacted to temporary exclusion by building permanent control.
Impatience transformed insecurity into abuse.
Roland also admitted he had treated her coldly from the beginning.
Not because he knew she was dangerous.
Because he disliked outsiders near me.
He owned that.
Again, complexity.
Victim can have flaws.
Villain can have wounds.
Actions still belong to the person who chose them.
They left separately.
No reconciliation.
May you like
No dramatic forgiveness.
Just two people finally speaking without Corwin, me, or fear translating between them.
