Chapter 11

Marcus lost his senior associate role.

Ramona lost access to the polo club and my household.

No theatrical exile.

No blood.

No disappearing people.

Despite my final line.

Ramona laughed when I told her.

“You said someone would disappear.”

“I changed my mind.”

That surprised her.

“I don’t need you gone.”

Then:

“I need your influence gone.”

That hurt more.

Good.

Marcus remained useful in some businesses.

Not at the club.

Not around sporting events.

Not in donor placement.

He hated the restriction.

Accepted it.

Partly because he knew the alternative was leaving Carbone entirely.

Ramona did leave Connecticut for a while.

Her choice.

Not mine.

She stayed with relatives in Arizona.

No one chased her.

Irrelevance is often quieter than punishment.
