Chapter 11

I visited Gabriel’s grave alone.
I had not spoken to my brother in years.
Not because I believed ghosts listened.
Because sometimes the living need somewhere to put sentences.
“You had a daughter.”
Obviously he knew.
“I raised her.”
That felt stranger to say.
Then:
“You should have told me who her mother was.”
Unfair.
He died before Evelyn was born.
Still.
Dead brothers tolerate unfairness well.
I thought about Gabriel.
Charming.
Reckless.
Gentler than the rest of us.
He would have hated the fact his daughter became a secret.
Maybe he would have caused worse chaos trying to claim her.
We would never know.
The next day I gave Evelyn a box of Gabriel’s things.
Not as replacement father.
History.
Photographs.
A watch.
A ridiculous leather jacket.
She laughed at it.
Good.
“Do I look like him?”
“Yes.”
She went quiet.
“Where?”
“Your eyebrows when angry.”
She immediately became angry that I said that.
Proof.
Then:
“Did he love me?”
“He knew you existed.”
I refused to invent.
“He wanted you protected.”
That I knew from Lucille.
“Anything more would be me guessing.”
Evelyn nodded.
Truth with limits.

Another family habit worth learning.
We do not fill unknown spaces just because certainty feels kinder.
