Chapter 1

My father discovered my husband had been beating me because my three-year-old daughter didn't know she was supposed to lie.

That was the beginning.

Not the bruises.

Not the ruined Christmas.

Not even Grant trying to hit Massimo Caradonna in a room full of men who already feared my father.

It began with Josephine.

And an ugly wooden reindeer.

Every Christmas at the Caradonna estate was excessive.

A tree nearly touched the ballroom ceiling.

Silver trays covered two dining tables.

Children opened gifts wrapped in velvet ribbon while adults drank wine that cost more than most people's rent.

Josephine sat beside me in her little red dress.

Waiting.

Every other child had already opened something.

A train set.

A dollhouse.

A miniature car.

Then Robert Hale stood.

My father-in-law crossed the room carrying a battered wooden rocking reindeer.

Paint chipped from its ears.

One runner scratched almost white.

The leather saddle cracked along the edge.

Robert shoved it across the floor.

It stopped against Josephine's shoes.

“We found it in the trash.”

He laughed.

“It suits you perfectly.”

A few conversations stopped.

Nobody laughed with him.

Josephine stared at the toy.

Then slowly hugged it.

That hurt more than if she'd cried.

She was grateful for it.

I immediately knelt beside her.

“Sweetheart—”

My sleeve slid upward.

Too far.

I knew before I looked.

Purple bruises covered my forearm.

Some old.

Some new.

Finger marks faded yellow near my wrist.

I pulled my sleeve down.

Josephine was faster.

She looked across the room.

At my father.

“Grandpa…”

Her little voice cracked.

“Daddy makes Mommy hide those before parties.”

Silence.

Real silence.

The kind powerful men create when they stop pretending everything is normal.

I looked at Massimo.

My father hadn't moved.

His eyes were fixed on my arm.

Grant reached me first.

He yanked my sleeve down.

Hard.

“Enough.”

Massimo started walking toward us.

Robert immediately stepped into his path.

“It's a marriage issue.”

My father looked past him.

At Grant.

Grant straightened.

“She falls.”

His voice was low.

“Stay out of my marriage.”

I felt something inside me collapse.

Because there it was.

The same lie.

The stairs.

The bathroom.

The bedroom door.

I fall.

I bruise easily.

I'm clumsy.

Eight months of explanations reduced to two words.

Massimo took another step.

Grant swung first.

He missed.

My father didn't.

One punch sent Grant backward into the antique sleigh display.

Wood cracked.

Blankets and decorative packages scattered across the floor.

Grant went down beneath the tilted frame.

Robert cursed.

Then did something I still don't understand.

He grabbed Josephine's reindeer.

My daughter screamed and held tighter.

Robert tried to tear it away.

Massimo crossed the room.

One slap sent Robert backward into the ornament lattice.

Ribbons and wooden decorations fell around him.

My father never looked away from Grant.

“You dared to hurt my daughter and my grandchild.”

His voice was quiet.

“You're finished.”

Grant's face changed.

Finally.

Fear.

I thought the room had already seen enough.

Then Josephine touched my father's hand.

“Grandpa?”

Massimo looked down.

She pointed at Grant.

“Daddy gets really mad when Mommy won't tell him where Grandma's red key is.”

My father stopped breathing.

So did I.

Grant's face turned white.

I looked at Massimo.

“What red key?”

He stared at my husband.

Then Robert.

May you like

And when he answered, his voice had changed completely.

“The one that opens this estate from underneath.”
