Chapter 10

Sebastian read Salvatore’s acknowledgment first.
Not aloud.
He handed it to Lucinda.
Her eyes moved across the page.
Then stopped.
Salvatore had written:
Lucinda Caradonna is my daughter.
No qualification.
No apology hidden behind politics.
Then:
I failed her by letting fear decide when truth was safe.
Her breathing broke.
Preston watched from across the room.
Still guarded.
Still arrogant.
“You're crying over a dead man who couldn't say it to your face.”
Lucinda looked up.
The old reflex—anger toward Salvatore—rose.
Then she looked back at the note.
A second paragraph waited.
If Enzo harms her because of this, the blame is mine.
Sebastian stared.
Lucinda kept reading.
Preston’s jaw tightened.
Salvatore had planned to call a private council after moving several volatile crews away from Boston.
He had not refused to acknowledge her.
He had been trying to keep Enzo from killing her in rage.
Then came the final line.
Preston has convinced her I chose Sebastian over her.
Do not let that boy turn my daughter into his weapon.
The room became silent.
Lucinda lowered the page.
Her face had changed completely.
The major twist was no longer simply that Preston lied.
It was how long he had prepared the lie.
Orlando brought the old photograph closer.
Three weeks before the warehouse fire.
Matteo Vellani and Preston.
Planning both Salvatore and Sebastian.
Lucinda stared.
“You knew Salvatore was my father before I did.”
Preston said nothing.
She understood.
Matteo told him.
Preston approached Lucinda deliberately.
Courted her deliberately.
Fed her questions about why Enzo treated her differently.
Why Salvatore watched her at gatherings.
Why her mother became nervous around both brothers.
He did not discover her wound.
He opened it.
Lucinda’s eyes filled.
“You made me ask.”
“Yes.”
His answer came without shame.
“You made me confront Salvatore.”
“Yes.”
“You made me believe he rejected me.”
Preston smiled.
“I told you what you were ready to believe.”
Sebastian’s jaw tightened.
Lucinda whispered:
“And the warehouse?”
Preston lifted his chin.
“Matteo planned it.”
“You helped.”
“I was twenty-one.”
“So?”
Her voice cracked.
“You were old enough to marry me a year later.”
Silence.
Preston’s eyes hardened.
The arrogance returned fully.
“Yes.”
One word.
No excuse.
He had helped arrange the warehouse attack.
When Salvatore survived, Enzo secretly imprisoned him for his own reasons.
Preston exploited that captivity.
Visited.
Threatened.
Intercepted Salvatore’s acknowledgment.
Kept Lucinda’s anger alive.
Then when Salvatore died in the cellar after his condition worsened, Preston told Lucinda the man had spent his final hours denying her.
He built twenty years of marriage on the worst night of her life.
Lucinda staggered back.
Sebastian watched.
No sympathy yet.
Because Elisa’s blood above her ear still existed.
Preston looked at both of them.
“So what now?”
His voice carried contempt.
“You two hug?”
He laughed.
“Maybe put a new plaque on the heritage wall.”
His eyes moved toward Lucinda.
“ILLEGITIMATE DAUGHTER.”
Her face went white.
Sebastian stepped forward.
Preston smiled.
“Come on.”
He wanted the blow.
Instead Sebastian looked toward Lucinda.
“Did he speak to you like this before tonight?”
She could not answer.
That silence answered.
Then Orlando noticed something else inside the compartment.
A second photograph.
Recent.
Preston meeting three current Caradonna capos.
One week ago.
May you like
The old revenge was not history.
Preston had been preparing another move against Sebastian now.
