Chapter 14

Greco was the only person still smiling.

Valentina noticed.

“You think you won.”

He looked at her.

“I walked into Carbone territory after fourteen years.”

“And?”

“And I'm still standing.”

Valentina glanced toward the open tunnel.

“Leave the way you came.”

Greco laughed.

“You sound like Carlo.”

“Good.”

His smile faded slightly.

Valentina continued.

“The west routes stay Carbone.”

“The north warehouses stay Carbone.”

“You get nothing.”

Greco’s eyes hardened.

“You owe my family blood.”

“No.”

Valentina looked toward Evelyn.

“Your brother made his choice.”

Then toward Greco.

“So did you.”

The older man stared.

For a moment the garden felt one breath away from violence.

Valentina did not move.

Neither did her bodyguards.

Silence held the balance.

Greco finally looked toward Evelyn.

“Come with me.”

Evelyn smiled.

“Why?”

“You're my family.”

She laughed.

A cruel, exhausted sound.

“Family?”

Her eyes hardened.

“You knew what my father did and let me hate the wrong people for thirty-one years.”

Greco’s jaw tightened.

“I was protecting you.”

Evelyn’s expression twisted.

“There it is.”

She looked around the garden.

“Every man’s favorite excuse.”

Valentina heard the irony.

So did Evelyn.

For one second their eyes met.

No forgiveness.

Only recognition.

Evelyn turned back to Greco.

“You don't get me either.”

She started toward the estate gates.

Valentina’s bodyguards stepped into her path.

Evelyn stopped.

Then smiled.

“You planning to lock me in a cellar?”

“No.”

Valentina’s voice remained calm.

“You leave through the front.”

Evelyn frowned.

Valentina continued.

“Where everyone can see you leaving.”

That hurt.

Not exile in darkness.

Public loss of place.

Evelyn looked toward the capos.

Men who had once stood when she entered.

None moved.

She lifted her chin.

“Enjoy your little victory.”

Her eyes found Valentina.

“Children grow up.”

Her voice became poisonous.

“And when Lily is old enough to hate you for every enemy you made in her name, remember me.”

Valentina’s hand closed once.

Then opened.

“No.”

Evelyn smiled.

“No?”

“I'll remember that she was thirsty.”

The garden went quiet.

Valentina looked toward the cooler.

“One can.”

Her eyes returned to Evelyn.

“That was all it took for you to show everyone exactly who you are.”

Evelyn’s smile disappeared.

She walked out.

Gerald remained.

He looked at the capos.

Then at the pin on the table.

“Twenty years.”

No one answered.

“I gave this family twenty years.”

Mateo’s voice was quiet.

“And today you gave it a three-year-old with a belt over her head.”

Gerald looked away.

His shoulders dropped for the first time.

Valentina did not enjoy it.

That surprised her.

She had imagined revenge would feel cleaner.

Instead it felt tired.

Gerald was stripped of his crews and all Carbone protection outside his own home.

Not killed.

Not beaten again.

Forced to live without the authority he had mistaken for identity.

Greco left through the tunnel.

The entrance was sealed before sunset.

No ritual.

No speech.

Stone over stone.

Done.

Then Lily came back outside.

She looked around at the damaged garden.

Her eyes found the soda can still sitting on the table.

She hesitated.

Valentina saw it.

“Do you still want it?”

Lily shook her head quickly.

“No.”

That hurt more than anything Gerald had said.

The child was afraid of the drink now.

Valentina crouched.

“You didn't do anything wrong.”

Lily looked toward the gate Evelyn had used.

“Aunt Evelyn mad?”

“Yes.”

“At me?”

Valentina’s throat tightened.

“No.”

Lily studied her face.

Then whispered:

“Can I have water?”

Valentina closed her eyes for half a second.

“Anything you want.”

But Lily shook her head.

“Just water.”

Valentina took her hand.

May you like

They walked inside together.

Behind them, the garden remained full of men who had just watched an empire change over something as small as a thirsty child.
