Chapter 4

Katherine’s fear had an origin.

My father.

Giovanni D’Angelo.

He died ten years earlier.

He believed every boss should have a “shadow household.”

One person ready to lead.

One relative ready to take children.

One estate ready to receive dependents.

Reasonable during unstable decades.

Then families did what they always do.

Turn backup plans into entitlement.

Katherine had been Sofia’s designated fallback during childbirth complications.

Not because Sofia chose her.

Because my father did.

When Sofia died years later, Katherine decided the old designation had effectively activated.

I disagreed.

She never told me.

Instead, she behaved as though Clara was partly hers.

What she wore.

What she ate.

Where she slept.

Which relatives saw her.

Small decisions.

I noticed some.

Ignored others.

Because Katherine loved her.

Again.

Love creating confidence where permission was missing.

Then she told me something that changed the scale.

“Sofia knew.”

I went cold.

“Knew what?”

“That I was supposed to take Clara if something happened to you.”

My wife had known about the shadow-household rule.

I had not.

“Did she agree?”

Katherine hesitated.

Wrong answer.

She had not.

In fact Sofia had written a letter objecting to it.

Katherine still had it.

Why?

May you like

Because Sofia gave it to her directly.

And Katherine never showed me.
