Chapter 14

My own failure arrived through Teresa.
She found me in Ruby’s restored room replacing the moon-shaped night-light.
“You think fixing furniture fixes the problem?”
I looked at her.
“No.”
“Good.”
She leaned against the door.
“Because you ignored Alina—”
Wrong universe. Need fix. In final must be consistent. We'll write Teresa says "Valentina". She probably has known him. Let's continue carefully.
“You ignored warning signs.”
“I know.”
“Do you?”
I turned.
She listed them.
Valentina moving Ruby’s chair at smaller dinners.
Marcus joking Ethan looked more like a Falcone heir than Ruby.
Staff suddenly asking whether Ruby should attend late family meals.
Ethan calling me “Sir” for a month because Marcus told him respect required distance.
I remembered every one.
Explained each away.
Marriage adjustment.
Family humor.
Old-fashioned relatives.
I had chosen comfort.
Again.
“I should have noticed.”
“Yes.”
No rescue.
Good.
Then Teresa surprised me.
“You also cannot notice everything.”
I stared.
“Which is it?”
“Both.”
Of course.
She smiled faintly.
“You should have listened better.”
Pause.
“You should not become a man who now watches every room waiting for betrayal.”
That hit.
After the banquet, I had started doing exactly that.
Checking chairs.
Watching staff reactions.
Reading every silence.
Control as penance.
Dangerous.
“If you turn fear into surveillance, Ruby still grows up inside fear.”
I looked at my daughter’s bed.
Right.
Another version of the same house.
Different villain.
Same atmosphere.
“What do I do?”
Teresa shrugged.
“Ask.”
Simple.
Ask Ruby.
Ask Ethan.
Ask staff.
Ask Valentina when something feels wrong.
Listen before proving.
Maybe leadership did not require omniscience.
Maybe it required making truth safe enough to arrive early.
That evening I asked Ruby:
“Do you like your room?”
“Yes.”
“Anything you don’t like?”
She pointed toward the curtains.
“Ugly.”
I stared.
Months of conspiracy.
Emotional trauma.
Her current grievance was curtains.
Good.
We replaced them.

Not every question needs a revelation.
That became a relief.
