Chapter 15

The garden was quiet the next morning.

No luncheon.

No capos.

No flower displays.

Only Lily sitting beneath the old oak tree with a new soda can between both hands.

Nora sat several feet away.

Her shoulder was bandaged.

Lily looked at her.

“You can have mine.”

Nora smiled.

“No, sweetheart.”

“You thirsty?”

“A little.”

Lily immediately stood.

She carried the can over.

Nora’s eyes filled.

“You drink first.”

Lily frowned.

Then took one exaggerated sip.

She handed it over.

“Now you.”

Nora drank.

From the terrace, Alessandro watched.

He had spent the night hearing Gerald’s accusation again.

You didn't even know which servants were afraid of Vivienne.

That part was true.

He had known everything happening beyond his walls.

Not enough inside them.

Nora eventually noticed him.

She stood.

“You don't have to.”

Alessandro walked down.

“Have to what?”

“Give me anything.”

He looked at the bandage on her shoulder.

“This isn't about a reward.”

Nora’s fingers tightened.

“I stayed quiet.”

“Yes.”

The direct answer surprised her.

Alessandro continued.

“You were afraid she'd send you away from Lily.”

“Yes.”

“You should have told me.”

Nora looked toward him.

Her expression hardened slightly.

“Would you have listened?”

The question stopped him.

She continued carefully.

“Three months ago I told Marco Miss Cross was changing Lily’s meals.”

Alessandro’s eyes narrowed.

“What?”

“He said you were busy.”

Silence.

Nora looked down.

“I tried once.”

That hurt differently.

Alessandro nodded.

“Then the failure began before yesterday.”

Nora looked at him.

He did not defend himself.

That mattered.

Marco lost his position as security captain.

Not because he had betrayed Alessandro.

Because he had allowed access to Alessandro to become something staff had to earn.

Daniel returned.

He did not receive a promotion.

Only an apology and his place back.

Nico Marzano did not immediately regain his old rank either.

He had entered the scheme because he wanted power badly enough to listen to Vivienne.

That truth remained.

Alessandro permitted him to remain in Boston without crew authority.

What came next would depend on what he did without being promised anything.

Gerald disappeared from Carbone territory.

No one chased him.

Without crews, titles, or Alessandro’s protection, his arrogance suddenly had a much smaller audience.

Vivienne left the estate that night.

She sent no apology.

Instead she sent one message three days later.

You will eventually discover Lily cannot sit at the center of your life forever.

Alessandro deleted it.

Not because the sentence was entirely false.

Lily would grow.

His relationship with her would change.

But Vivienne’s mistake had always been assuming love was a limited chair someone else had to vacate.

Weeks passed.

Lily stopped hiding behind Nora whenever elegant women entered the garden.

That took longer than Alessandro expected.

One evening he found her standing beside the beverage cooler.

She stared at it.

He crouched.

“What?”

Her fingers touched the handle.

“Am I allowed?”

The question cut through him.

“For a drink?”

She nodded.

Alessandro opened the cooler.

“What do you want?”

“Orange.”

He handed her one.

She held it.

Then looked at him.

“Even before dinner?”

He almost closed his eyes.

“Yes.”

“Vivienne said ladies who ask twice don't get anything.”

Alessandro’s jaw tightened.

He forced his voice to remain gentle.

“Vivienne doesn't make rules here.”

Lily thought.

“Who does?”

He looked toward Nora crossing the garden.

Then at the guards.

Then back at his daughter.

“We make rules that keep people safe.”

Lily seemed satisfied enough.

She opened the soda.

Or tried.

Her fingers slipped.

Alessandro opened it for her.

She took a drink.

Then held it toward him.

“You want?”

He smiled faintly.

“No.”

She shrugged and drank again.

A month later, Alessandro reopened the west garden.

The hidden service passage remained.

He considered sealing it.

Instead he stationed no guard there.

No secret meetings.

No hidden routes.

Just an old corridor returned to being a corridor.

Lily planted daisies beside the panel.

Nora helped.

One afternoon Nico stood at the edge of the garden.

He had been invited.

Nothing more.

Lily recognized him vaguely.

“The tunnel man?”

Nico almost smiled.

“Something like that.”

Alessandro watched him.

Nico looked toward the council room.

Then toward Alessandro.

“I still want back in.”

There was no lie in it.

No false humility either.

Alessandro appreciated that.

“I know.”

“Will I?”

Alessandro looked toward Lily.

She was teaching Nora how to balance a soda can on the stone wall.

Then back at Nico.

“I haven't decided.”

Nico nodded.

For once, a man who wanted power accepted an unanswered question.

Alessandro walked toward his daughter.

Lily lifted the can proudly.

“Daddy, look.”

He did.

The same ordinary object that had nearly gotten Nora beaten into silence had exposed an entire shadow structure inside his home.

Now it was simply a soda again.

That was how Alessandro wanted it.

May you like

The only thing still undecided was whether Nico Marzano had returned because six years outside had changed him—

or because he had finally found a more patient way back to power.
