Chapter 3

The staff told the truth slowly.

Fear has habits.

Even after the person controlling it leaves the room, people still glance toward the door.

Margaret, the senior housekeeper, spoke first.

“Mrs. Moretti changed Lily’s routine three months ago.”

“What routine?”

“She moved Miss Lily’s breakfast later.”

“Why?”

Margaret hesitated.

“She said family children should learn not to expect immediate service.”

I looked at her.

“She is three.”

“Yes.”

“What else?”

Lily’s afternoon snacks stopped.

Her toys were removed from the main salon whenever guests came.

Her small chair at the family table disappeared twice.

Each time, Mason’s chair had been moved closer to mine.

I looked toward Luca Moretti.

He sat silently at the end of the terrace.

Watching.

Too calmly.

“What did you know?”

He spread his hands.

“Household matters.”

Wrong answer.

“Try again.”

His jaw tightened.

“I knew Vanessa wanted clearer boundaries.”

“Between?”

He looked toward the breakfast-room windows.

“The children.”

I almost laughed.

“Why would a three-year-old and an eleven-year-old need hierarchy?”

Luca said nothing.

Margaret answered instead.

“Because Miss Lily kept asking why Mr. Mason sat in your chair.”

I turned.

“What?”

During one of my trips, Vanessa had allowed Mason to eat at the head of the table.

My chair.

Lily objected.

Not politically.

Because toddlers understand ownership with terrifying clarity.

Daddy’s chair.

Vanessa punished her.

First no dessert.

Then no breakfast.

Then cleaning duties.

Luca finally spoke.

“It was symbolic.”

I looked at him.

“So was forcing my daughter to kneel.”

He shifted.

That bothered him.

Good.

Margaret continued.

Vanessa also began calling Lily “the downstairs girl” whenever staff were present.

Not always servant’s child.

Sometimes worse.

“Why downstairs?”

Margaret’s face tightened.

Because Lily’s biological mother, Elena Moretti, had grown up in the service wing.

My chest went cold.

Elena.

Dead two years before I married Vanessa.

The woman I had loved before the family approved of her.

Her mother had been one of my grandmother’s housekeepers.

Elena studied at the dining table after shifts helping her mother.

Eventually she entered my world.

Then my life.

The old family never completely forgave either of us.

I looked at Vanessa.

She finally looked afraid for a different reason.

This was not merely a stepmother humiliating a child.

She had reached into the old contempt toward Lily’s dead mother and taught the next generation to carry it.
