Chapter 5

Vanessa hated Isabella long before the bruises.

Not because Isabella was weak.

Because she was Lombardi.

Vanessa had spent years watching her brother operate beneath stronger names.

Hale was respected.

Never dominant.

Then Grant married my daughter.

Vanessa thought that changed everything.

She started referring to Isabella as “the bridge.”

I hated the word immediately.

A person turned into infrastructure.

She planned dinners where Hale men sat beside Lombardi collectors.

Invited people who normally never entered the same private rooms.

Used marriage as social glue.

None of that was automatically wrong.

Then Isabella began objecting to how Noah was presented.

Vanessa saw it as sabotage.

She told Grant:

“If she keeps reminding everyone he’s Lombardi first, you’ll always be the husband standing beside the throne.”

There.

The wound.

Grant did not want to replace me.

He wanted never to feel beneath me.

Impossible goal inside a hierarchy he willingly married into.

So instead of building his own authority, he borrowed his son’s future.

That was the part I could not forgive professionally.

Not because I guarded a throne.

Because children should not become ladders.
