Chapter 9

Estelle slapped Harold.

Not dramatic.

One clean strike.

Then she stepped back.

I raised an eyebrow.

She looked at me.

“He deserved it.”

Probably.

But this was not her redemption scene.

I turned back to Harold.

“Where is Miles?”

No answer.

Agnes said:

“He’s in the bakery.”

Everyone looked at her.

“How do you know?”

She pointed to her recipe book.

One page contained a list of old oven maintenance marks.

Nothing to do with tonight.

Except one handwritten note from yesterday:

CELLAR WALL OPENS FROM HOTEL SIDE ONLY — UNLESS BAKERY VALVE IS RELEASED.

She had figured out the mechanism over decades.

The fire damaged the front but not the cellar completely.

If Miles needed the passage after Nolan sealed the hotel side, he would have to return to the bakery and open the old mechanical release manually.

Why would he?

To retrieve something hidden there.

The photographs?

No.

We already had copies.

Then Harold’s eyes moved.

Just slightly.

Toward the black case.

Rafe saw it too.

“What?”

Harold said nothing.

I opened the case again.

Removed the papers.

Ran my hand along the lining.

False bottom.

Of course.

Inside:

A brass hotel master key.

And one small voice recorder.

I pressed play.

Miles’s voice.

Julian’s.

Harold’s.

Weeks of meetings.

Not insurance only.

Proof.

But why hide it where they could lose it?

Because someone had been recording the others without their knowledge.

Miles.

He planned to hold both Monroe and Harold if the structure succeeded.

Everyone building a cage around me while quietly building cages around each other.

Beautiful.

Then one final recording.

Miles alone.

“If Adrian discovers the structure before midnight, Plan B is simple. Harold takes the fall. Julian blames security. Estelle stays with Adrian. I stay indispensable.”

Harold’s face went white.

I almost laughed.

“You weren’t the architect.”

His mouth tightened.

“Miles learned from me.”

“Too well.”

The old man finally understood.

His protégé intended to sacrifice him.

Then another line on the recorder:

“Agnes cannot survive the bakery.”

Silence.

Estelle covered her mouth.

Harold looked sick.

There.

Clear.

Julian ordered property destruction.

Miles escalated it into attempted murder.

Not because Agnes threatened the hotel.

Because she threatened Miles’s position.

I stood.

“Rafe.”

He nodded.

Bakery.

Now.

And for the first time all night, Harold asked to come.

Not out of loyalty.

May you like

Out of fury.

Sometimes betrayal makes useful companions.
