Chapter 1

The afternoon sun poured through the massive floor-to-ceiling windows of the Whitmore estate, casting a natural, cinematic glow over the sprawling suburban living room. There was no artificial yellow tint to the light; everything was crisp, bright, and impeccably staged. A towering balloon arch in pastel shades framed a lavish dessert table, while a rolling cart nearby overflowed with intricately frosted cupcakes and stacked party boxes. It was the picture-perfect third birthday party for a picture-perfect family. Or at least, that was the illusion Natalie Whitmore was desperately trying to project.
Natalie stood rigidly beside the three-tiered cake, her fair, rosy complexion flushed with mounting irritation. At thirty, she was undeniably beautiful, her elegant maternity dress wrapping flawlessly around her seven-month pregnancy. Diamonds glittered from her wedding ring and necklace, catching the light with her every sharp movement. Beside her stood little Lily, a vision in a pink birthday dress and a matching headband, her tiny flats shuffling nervously against the hardwood floor.
Across the room, Sebastian Whitmore watched them. At thirty-five, he possessed the kind of devastatingly handsome features usually reserved for movie stars, but it was his aura that commanded the room. He wore a tailored black three-piece suit and an open-collar dress shirt, looking less like a suburban father and more like a veteran Mafia boss holding court. A heavy family signet ring gleamed on his finger, matching the quiet, intimidating power that rolled off him in waves.
"Look at the camera, Lily. Smile right now," Natalie muttered through gritted teeth, her voice a harsh whisper barely masked by the ambient party music.
"I'm tired, Mommy," Lily whimpered, her lower lip trembling as she rubbed her eyes. "I want Daddy."
"I don't care what you want," Natalie hissed, her manicured fingers gripping the edge of the table. "Ethan is holding the phone. You are going to look at your uncle, and you are going to smile. Do you understand me?"
"Natalie, just let her rest for a second," Ethan Cole, Natalie’s twenty-eight-year-old brother, called out. He was dressed in a sharp dress shirt and trousers, a luxury wristwatch catching the glare of the window as he adjusted the smartphone in his hands. "The angle is fine."
"The angle is not the problem, Ethan! The problem is this ungrateful child," Natalie snapped, her voice rising above the pleasantries.
"Natalie, calm down," Victor Cole, her sixty-four-year-old father, said from his position near the gift table. Dressed in a navy blazer and slacks, Victor sipped his drink with an air of absolute entitlement. "The girl just needs to learn how to behave in public."
"Exactly," Natalie breathed heavily, her eyes narrowing at the terrified three-year-old. "Smile. Now."
"No!" Lily cried, burying her face in her hands.

Without another word, Natalie’s hand shot out. She suddenly slapped Lily hard across the face, the cracking sound silencing the entire room. Lily gasped in sheer shock, stumbling backward until she fell heavily against the edge of the wrapped gift table, her small hands clutching her rosy cheek.
"Stop acting spoiled," Natalie sneered, her voice dripping with venom. "Nobody came here for you."
