Chapter 5

Nobody murdered my father at a dinner table.

The truth was quieter.

That made it worse.

Vincent had discovered my mother and three old captains were moving crews without his approval. He confronted them. He planned to remove Evelyn from family influence and send Nathan’s father out of the central circle.

Then Vincent traveled north for a private meeting.

His security detail was changed at the last minute.

By Evelyn.

An old rival crew attacked his car on the return road.

My father survived the first assault.

Help should have arrived.

It did not.

“Who delayed it?” I asked.

Martin looked at Evelyn.

My mother answered herself.

“I did.”

Maya squeezed my hand.

I could barely feel it.

“Why?”

Evelyn looked almost offended by the question.

“Because your father needed to understand that a boss who humiliates his own family eventually stands alone.”

“He died.”

“He was warned.”

I stared at her.

Not denial.

Justification.

Always justification.

Nathan leaned forward.

“She didn’t order the attack.”

I looked at him.

“No.”

He nodded quickly.

“Exactly.”

“She simply knew it was happening and made sure nobody reached him.”

Silence.

Nathan’s face changed.

My mother looked at me with the same maddening certainty she had used outside the shed.

“Vincent chose pride.”

I heard Maya’s breath catch.

Evelyn continued.

“He could have repaired things. Instead he threatened everyone who had helped build him.”

“So you let him die.”

“He created the circumstances.”

There it was.

The victim always caused the punishment.

My father.

Maya.

My unborn child.

Same story.

Different target.

Martin rubbed both hands over his face.

“I stayed quiet because Nathan’s father threatened my sons.”

Evelyn laughed.

“No one threatened anyone.”

Martin looked at her.

“You asked where they slept.”

My mother’s smile disappeared.

That was enough.

Fear had done the rest.

I finally understood her method.

Evelyn rarely issued direct threats.

She placed loved ones inside sentences and let imagination become the weapon.

Exactly what she had done to Maya.

Exactly what she had done to the relatives around this table.

I looked at the recorder.

“How did you get this?”

Maya hesitated.

Then she said something I did not expect.

“I didn’t put it in the shed.”

I looked at her.

“Then who did?”

Her eyes moved toward Nathan.

He went completely still.

May you like

And suddenly the recorder was no longer only evidence.

It had been part of their plan too.
