Chapter 11 - THE FORGOTTEN SON

Raffaele had known Emilio cheated.

Everyone knew.

Nobody spoke.

Children born outside marriage were handled quietly.

Money.

Distance.

Silence.

But a son?

A son old enough to be Raffaele’s brother?

Grace explained.

Elias was seven years older than Raffaele.

His mother worked at one of Emilio’s clubs.

Emilio never recognized him publicly.

Privately, he used him.

Messenger.

Observer.

Eventually strategist.

Elias grew up close enough to the family to understand it but never close enough to belong.

“What did he want?” Sofia asked.

Grace answered.

“At first? Recognition.”

Raffaele laughed without humor.

“And later?”

“Proof that blood meant nothing.”

There it was.

The root.

Emilio created an illegitimate son, denied him the name, then used his intelligence.

Elias learned family loyalty from exclusion.

When Raffaele and Luca were born, legitimate heirs, Elias watched them receive everything he was denied.

He did not attack directly.

He learned patience.

“How do you know?” Raffaele asked.

“Thomas.”

“Again.”

“Yes.”

“Thomas worked for Elias.”

“For a time.”

Raffaele’s eyes hardened.

“Everyone worked for everyone.”

“That was Elias’s genius.”

Grace looked at him.

“He never needed loyalty. Only temporary need.”

Thomas needed Emilio’s help.

Vincent needed protection from Luca’s supposed betrayal.

Catherine needed to keep her husband from killing his brother.

Caleb needed money and control.

Frederick needed debt relief.

Each person became useful because of something already inside them.

Raffaele thought of himself.

What did Elias use in him?

Anger.

Pride.

Certainty.

The easiest tools.

“Did Elias kill Beatrice?” Sofia asked.

Grace hesitated.

“I don’t know.”

Raffaele looked at her.

“But?”

“Thomas believed Elias did not intend for her to die.”

“That doesn’t absolve him.”

“No.”

“What was intended?”

“To force Luca out.”

“Why?”

“Elias hated him.”

Raffaele frowned.

“Why Luca?”

“Because Luca knew Elias was Emilio’s son.”

Raffaele stared.

Grace continued.

“Luca wanted Emilio to recognize him.”

“Why?”

“He thought giving Elias a place would stop the poison.”

Raffaele laughed softly.

“Luca always thought people could be repaired.”

“Yes.”

“And Elias?”

“He took it as pity.”

Sofia whispered, “So he hated him more.”

“Yes.”

Raffaele looked toward the windows.

“Where would Elias take Caleb?”

Grace thought.

“Somewhere tied to Thomas.”

“Why?”

“Caleb discovered something after Thomas died.”

“What?”

“A key.”

Raffaele stared.

Another key.

Grace continued.

“Thomas kept a room beneath our old family warehouse.”

“What’s inside?”

“I never knew.”

“Caleb did?”

“He found it last year.”

“And Elias contacted him after?”

“Yes.”

Raffaele understood.

Caleb’s relationship with Sofia may have begun through Vincent, but Elias weaponized it later.

Caleb had something Elias needed.

Not just Sofia’s memory.

Something Thomas left.

“Where is the warehouse?”

Grace gave the address.

Raffaele went with Sofia, Anthony Russo, and Grace.

No Vincent.

Raffaele did not trust him enough.

No Dante.

Same reason.

The Mercer warehouse stood empty.

Beneath the loading floor, a hidden staircase led to a small room.

Inside was a table.

Two chairs.

A metal locker.

The key was missing.

But the locker had been forced open recently.

Empty.

On the wall, Thomas Mercer had carved one sentence:

BEATRICE DID NOT DIE FOR WHAT SHE KNEW.

Raffaele stared.

Below:

SHE DIED FOR WHO SHE CHOSE.

Sofia frowned.

“Who?”

Grace looked sick.

“I don’t know.”

Anthony found an old photograph taped beneath the table.

Beatrice.

Luca.

Catherine.

Thomas.

And a fifth person.

A young woman.

Raffaele recognized her.

“Isabella Rourke.”

Grace looked at him.

“Who?”

Raffaele stared.

She had been Elias’s mother.

He had met her once as a child.

Emilio introduced her as a family friend.

Raffaele remembered her crying at a Christmas party.

He never knew why.

Sofia looked at the photograph.

“Beatrice knew Elias’s mother.”

Raffaele nodded.

Grace turned the picture over.

One handwritten line:

WE TELL HIM AFTER THE WEDDING.

Raffaele frowned.

“What wedding?”

Grace stared.

“Beatrice was engaged?”

Raffaele shook his head.

“No.”

Sofia looked at him.

“Maybe not hers.”

Then Anthony’s phone rang.

Vincent.

Urgent.

Raffaele answered.

“What?”

“Dante is missing.”

Raffaele’s eyes narrowed.

“Why do I care?”

“Because he left something.”

“What?”

“A message for Sofia.”

Raffaele looked at his daughter.

“What does it say?”

Vincent read:

BEATRICE CHOSE LUCA.

Sofia frowned.

Raffaele went still.

“What does that mean?”

Vincent’s voice lowered.

“I think Beatrice was helping Luca leave the family.”

Grace stared at the photograph.

Wedding.

Choice.

Luca.

Then she whispered:

“No.”

Raffaele looked at her.

“What?”

Grace pointed at Beatrice and Luca.

“Thomas once said the worst thing Emilio ever learned was that Beatrice loved the wrong Santoro.”

Silence.

Sofia looked confused.

Raffaele did not.

Beatrice had not merely trusted Luca.

She had been in love with him.

Her uncle.

No.

Not biologically?

Raffaele’s mind raced.

Luca was Raffaele’s brother.

Beatrice’s uncle.

Impossible.

Grace saw the horror.

“No. Not that.”

Raffaele stared.

“What?”

“Luca was not Emilio’s son.”

Silence.

Grace continued.

“Catherine knew.”

Raffaele’s wife.

“Then whose?”

Grace looked at Isabella Rourke in the photograph.

“Elias’s mother had another child.”

Raffaele stopped.

“Luca.”

Grace nodded.

Luca Santoro had not been Raffaele’s brother by blood.

He had been the hidden son of Isabella Rourke and another man, raised by Emilio inside the Santoro family.

And Beatrice had discovered the truth.

Then fallen in love with him.
