Chapter 13

The sewing room reopened for the children a year later.

Not formally.

Violet wandered in.

That was how healing often happened.

No ceremony.

She stood at the doorway.

I happened to be nearby.

“Want to leave?”

She shook her head.

Then entered.

The hidden service door remained.

I considered sealing it permanently.

Decided not to.

Architecture had not locked her.

People did.

We cleaned the passage.

Added lights.

Removed the storage-room lock.

Now the door opened from both sides.

Simple.

Violet walked through holding Bunny.

Henry followed.

Not because I asked.

Because siblings.

They reached the little storage room.

Violet stared.

Then said:

“Small.”

“Yes.”

In memory it had probably become enormous.

She sat on the floor.

Henry sat beside her.

I waited outside.

No need to turn their moment into mine.

After a while Violet came out.

“Daddy.”

“Yes?”

“Can this be secret fort?”

I almost laughed.

“If the door never locks.”

She thought.

“Okay.”

So the room that once contained her became a fort.

Pillows.

Books.

Flashlights.

No secrecy from adults.

Just childhood secrecy—the kind where parents pretend not to know exactly where snacks disappear.

The sewing room became ordinary again.

Spools.

Fabric.

Noise.

One afternoon Violet asked for the missing rabbit ear.

We had kept it in an envelope.

She brought it to the sewing table.

“Fix now.”

I nodded.

A seamstress repaired it.

Not perfectly.

The stitch remained visible.

Violet approved.

“Scar.”

“Yes.”

She hugged Bunny.

No hiding compartment anymore.

No memory card.

May you like

Just stuffing.

Exactly what a toy should contain.
