Chapter 14

Edward Caldwell was alive.
Hidden in Connecticut.
Five years of staged death.
Not because he feared enemies.
Because dead men become myths.
And myths are easier to obey.
Victoria sat down.
For the first time all day, she looked genuinely shaken.
“You’re lying.”
Daniel shook his head.
“No.”
Preston stared at Marcus.
“You knew?”
Marcus said nothing.
That was yes.
Tiffany whispered:
“Grandpa?”
No one answered her.
Interesting.
Cruelty finally reached their side of the table.
I looked at Daniel.
“What did Edward want?”
“The Pembroke organization.”
“Through marriage?”
“Yes.”
“Why stay hidden?”
“To avoid old enemies.”
My father laughed.
“Coward.”
Marcus snapped:
“He survived.”
Sebastian looked at him.
“So did Catherine.”
Silence.
That landed.
I asked:
“Did Edward order the Manhattan surveillance?”
Daniel nodded.
“Security mapping?”
“Yes.”
“Pressure if I refused Preston?”
“Yes.”
Preston looked sick.
I almost felt sorry for him.
Almost.
He had believed himself heir.
He was another piece.
Victoria whispered:
“Edward promised Preston would lead.”
Marcus finally spoke.
“He says many things.”
She turned.
“You bastard.”
He shrugged.
“You believed him.”
The Caldwell family was cracking exactly how they had tried to crack me.
Not through violence.
Through discovering love had been conditional.
I looked at Preston.
“What were you promised?”
He stared at the floor.
“Pembroke crews.”
“And me?”
Silence.
“Preston.”
He finally answered.
“A wife who couldn’t leave.”
My father moved.
I stopped him.
Again.
Preston looked at me.
For the first time, no arrogance.
Only shame.
“I thought once you had children…”
My stomach tightened.
“You thought I’d stay.”
“Yes.”
“Even if you hurt me.”
His eyes closed.
“Yes.”
There it was.
No mystery.
No excuse.
Control.
I looked at Victoria.
She whispered:
“That’s marriage.”
I turned.
“No.”
She frowned.
“That’s what men do.”
“No.”
“That’s what women endure.”
“No.”
For the first time, my anger at her softened into something uglier.
Understanding.
Someone had taught Victoria that pain was marriage.
Then she built a family around teaching the same lesson.
But explanation was not absolution.
I looked at Daniel.
“Can Edward hear us?”
He hesitated.
“Yes.”
My eyes narrowed.
“How?”
Daniel looked at Tiffany’s phone.
