Chapter 3

The bright, natural, cinematic lighting of the exhibit hall suddenly felt like a harsh interrogation spotlight. The ambient hum of the donor reception died instantly. The wealthy white American guests, the seasoned capos, and the heavily armed bodyguards froze in their tracks. The revelation hung in the crisp air, devastating and absolute.

Adrian Moretti froze. The forty-six-year-old senior capo, dressed in an immaculate tailored suit with a luxury wristwatch gleaming under the lights, turned entirely rigid. His fair, rosy skin paled to an ashen white. The confident, untouchable aura of a high-ranking Mafia associate evaporated in a fraction of a second.

Celeste slowly turned toward him. Her beautiful, elegant face was a mask of pure, unadulterated panic. The secret she thought was buried in the dark, silent hours of the Moretti estate had just been dragged into the blinding light by a nearsighted four-year-old.

"Mia," Rocco said, his voice a low, dangerous rumble that sent a tremor through the floorboards. "What did you say?"

"She takes them so I can't see," Mia whispered, burying her face back into Rocco's shoulder, terrified of the adults. "She locks my door. But I can hear Uncle Adrian's voice in the hallway. They whisper."

"She is lying!" Celeste shrieked, her voice pitching into a hysterical octave. She pointed frantically at the little girl. "Rocco, she has a wild imagination! She has nightmares! You know she makes things up!"

Adrian’s breath hitched. He looked at the veteran Mafia boss kneeling on the floor, knowing that Rocco’s mind was already calculating the logistics of the betrayal. To save his own life, Adrian needed to discredit the child immediately.

"The girl is blind without those lenses, Rocco," Adrian said, his voice trembling slightly despite his best efforts to maintain his American accent. "She couldn't possibly know who is in the house. She's confused."

Mia pulled her face away from her father's chest. With a sudden, defiant surge of courage, the four-year-old reached her small hand into the pocket of her soft cardigan.

She pulled out a slightly older, slightly scratched, but perfectly intact spare pair of prescription glasses.

She unfolded the arms and slid them onto her face, pushing them up her small nose. Her bright blue eyes blinked, coming into sharp, terrifying focus as she looked directly at Adrian and Celeste.

"I can see everything," Mia said clearly.

Adrian panicked before he could stop himself. The sight of the spare glasses completely short-circuited his rational thought. The realization that the child had been watching them, clearly and perfectly, for weeks, destroyed his composure.

"Celeste," Adrian gasped, taking a horrified step backward, his eyes wide with impending doom. "You said she was always asleep."

The entire museum hall inhaled a collective, horrified breath. Adrian had just accidentally confessed.

Rocco slowly stands.

The movement was deliberate, deeply masculine, and utterly terrifying. He rose to his full height, his tailored three-piece suit falling perfectly back into place. His fair, rosy face was completely devoid of emotion, a blank canvas of absolute, apocalyptic fury. He stood between his daughter and the traitors, a towering warlord about to dispense judgment.
