Chapter 1 - OUTSIDE THIS HOUSE

Rain turned the mansion driveway black.

Clara Vance hit the wet stone on one knee, caught herself with one hand, and almost lost the cracked smartphone clenched in the other.

Behind her, Julian Sterling stood beneath the covered entrance as though throwing his wife into a storm were an ordinary end to an argument.

“Outside this house, you’re nothing.”

The words reached Clara more clearly than the slap had.

The left side of her face burned.

Her arm hurt where Julian had gripped it.

But humiliation hurt differently.

It entered slowly.

Sienna Miller stood behind him in an elegant dress, one shoulder against the doorway.

She laughed.

Not loudly.

That made it worse.

Clara had discovered them less than twenty minutes earlier.

She had returned home unexpectedly after dinner with her father was canceled.

She found Sienna barefoot in the upstairs hallway.

Julian’s jacket was hanging from a chair.

Two glasses sat beside the fireplace.

Nobody needed to explain.

Clara demanded that Sienna leave.

Julian told Clara to calm down.

Clara laughed at him.

Then she saw two travel bags near the rear staircase.

Not overnight bags.

Packed bags.

Julian tried to move her away from them.

She asked where he was going.

He refused to answer.

She reached for one.

He slapped her.

Then dragged her to the door.

Now Clara sat in the rain.

Sienna watched.

Julian pointed toward the gate.

“Go back to your father.”

Clara looked up.

“You planned to.”

His expression shifted.

Only slightly.

She saw it.

“What?”

Julian stepped outside.

“Give me the phone.”

Clara pulled it against her chest.

“No.”

“Clara.”

“Why?”

He came closer.

The phone had cracked when she fell, but the screen still worked.

She pressed one name.

Dad.

Arthur answered on the first ring.

“Clara?”

She tried to speak normally.

Failed.

“Dad…”

Something changed in Arthur’s breathing.

“What happened?”

Clara looked at Julian.

“He hit me and threw me out.”

Silence.

Then:

“Stay where you are.”

The line ended.

Julian’s face hardened.

“You shouldn’t have done that.”

Clara almost laughed.

“You hit Arthur Vance’s daughter and you think the mistake was the phone call?”

Sienna stopped smiling.

Julian looked toward the road.

For the first time, Clara saw fear.

Not fear of Arthur’s anger.

Something more specific.

“Get inside,” Julian said.

Clara stared.

“What?”

“Now.”

He grabbed her wrist.

She jerked away.

“You just threw me out.”

“I changed my mind.”

“You don’t get to—”

He grabbed her again.

Two headlights appeared beyond the gate.

Julian froze.

The first SUV entered fast.

Then the second.

Both stopped hard near the front steps.

Arthur Vance stepped out before the rain could settle on the roof.

He wore a tailored three-piece suit beneath a dark overcoat.

Two bodyguards followed.

At sixty-five, Arthur did not resemble a man arriving to rescue his daughter.

He resembled a man arriving to collect a debt.

He saw Clara on the ground.

Then saw the mark on her face.

His expression did not explode.

It emptied.

That frightened Julian.

Arthur walked toward his daughter.

Julian moved down the steps.

“Arthur, this is between—”

Julian grabbed Clara’s wrist again.

Arthur caught his arm.

He tore Julian’s hand away with sudden force and moved Clara behind him.

Julian staggered.

“She’s my wife.”

Arthur stared at him.

“This is none of your business.”

For one second, rain was the only sound.

Then Arthur grabbed both of Julian’s lapels.

He drove him backward.

Julian struck the padded porch bench and fell across it.

He tried to rise.

Arthur’s bodyguards stepped forward.

Julian stopped.

Arthur did not hit him again.

He turned to Clara.

Removed his coat.

Placed it around her shoulders.

That gentleness somehow made the violence before it feel colder.

“Can you stand?”

Clara nodded.

Arthur looked at Sienna.

Then Julian.

His voice lowered.

“You two disappearing has something to do with me.”

Sienna went still.

Julian’s face lost all color.

Clara saw it.

Arthur saw it too.

Julian whispered:

“How do you know about that?”

Clara frowned.

“Know about what?”

Arthur’s eyes stayed on Julian.

“Midnight.”

Julian stopped breathing.

“West river.”

Sienna took one step backward.

“Black sedan.”

Arthur continued.

“Driver wearing gray gloves.”

Julian stared at him as though Arthur had opened his skull and read what was inside.

Clara looked between them.

“What is he talking about?”

Arthur finally turned toward her.

“The bags upstairs.”

Clara’s stomach tightened.

“You know about them?”

“I know where your husband planned to go.”

Julian found his voice.

“You set me up.”

Arthur’s expression did not change.

“Yes.”

Sienna whispered, “Julian…”

Arthur looked at her.

“The road you were promised does not exist.”

Then at Julian.

“The man you expected at midnight is not coming.”

Julian’s fear became anger.

“You used us.”

Arthur glanced at Clara’s bruised cheek.

“I used you.”

His voice darkened.

“What I did not do was tell you to put your hands on my daughter.”

Clara stared at her father.

A different pain began beneath the first.

“You knew Julian was planning to leave?”

Arthur looked at her.

“Yes.”

“How long?”

“Three weeks.”

The rain suddenly felt colder.

“You knew my husband was secretly planning to disappear with her for three weeks?”

Arthur did not answer fast enough.

Clara stepped away.

“Dad.”

“Yes.”

“And you said nothing to me?”

“I had a reason.”

Julian laughed.

It was bitter.

Broken.

“Tell her.”

Arthur looked at him.

Julian’s smile widened.

“Tell your daughter why you let me sleep beside her every night while you watched.”

Clara turned toward her father.

Arthur’s eyes hardened.

Julian spoke before he could.

“Because I wasn’t the man he was hunting.”

A pause.

May you like

“I was bait.”

And in that instant Clara understood that the affair was only the first betrayal of the night.
