Chapter 10

Salvatore blamed himself.

I knew before he said it.

“You should have known.”

He looked at me.

“Yes.”

“No.”

That surprised him.

I continued.

“You should have asked more questions.”

He nodded.

Different.

“Katherine controlled table service. Marcus controlled half the wine staff. You had no reason to inspect my family decanter.”

“I had reason after the second incident.”

True.

“Why didn’t you?”

He looked ashamed.

“Because you told me not to treat family dinners like operations.”

I remembered.

After Lucia died, Salvatore doubled security everywhere.

It made Clara nervous.

I ordered him to reduce visible checks inside the family rooms.

Katherine used that.

Again.

Not inventing weakness.

Using decisions already mine.

I sighed.

“She keeps turning trust into access.”

“Yes.”

That was the mechanism.

I asked:

“Who brought the first mild test?”

He had already traced it.

A server named Helen Ward.

Widowed.

Katherine paid her son’s school fees.

There it was.

Another dependency.

Helen admitted she added something Katherine described as harmless.

She had no idea there were multiple tests.

No grand conspiracy.

Just another person persuaded that small harm was acceptable for a powerful woman.

I sat with her privately.

She cried.

“I thought it was to help you sleep.”

“Why put it in wine without telling me?”

She had no answer.

Good.

Some actions should become difficult to explain when spoken plainly.

Then Helen said something unexpected.

“Mrs. D’Angelo said your father used to do the same.”

I froze.

“What?”

“She said small doses were how old bosses learned tolerance.”

Nonsense.

But familiar nonsense.

Katherine had wrapped manipulation in tradition.

I asked my mother’s old physician.

He laughed when I repeated it.

“Your father hated being drugged.”

Good.

Lie confirmed.

Katherine had not only manufactured my illness.

She invented a family custom to make helpers feel honorable.

That was her greatest talent.

Cruelty became tradition.

Manipulation became protection.

Ambition became stability.

May you like

And Clara crying over an empty plate became “learning her place.”

I was done letting language disguise behavior.
