Chapter 4

Claribel did not create the original lie.

That mattered.

My father did.

Augustus Thornwick.

Dead seven years.

Still rearranging lives.

Why?

Seraphine had challenged something he considered sacred.

The Thornwick Succession Compact.

Not a legal document.

A family agreement.

The spouse of the next head was expected to support one designated male successor from inside approved bloodlines.

If the marriage produced no son within a certain period, the family could shift inheritance influence toward a nephew.

Seraphine hated it.

So did I.

But I treated it as old men talking.

She understood something I did not.

Old men talking becomes structure if nobody stops them.

Three months before the crash, Seraphine confronted my father.

Told him any child we had would choose his own life.

Daughter or son.

No grooming.

No predetermined chair.

My father called her disruptive.

Then dangerous.

Not physically dangerous.

Ideologically.

She could influence me.

Apparently that was worse.

When the accident occurred, Father saw opportunity.

Not to kill her.

He was not that.

Something subtler.

Let grief remove the argument.

Let Seraphine live quietly somewhere else.

Let me become head unencumbered by conflict.

He convinced himself separation served both of us.

That was the disease in this family.

People making permanent choices for others, then naming it stability.

Agnes knew because she had served my mother.

She was sent to the recovery house after the accident.

She saw Seraphine alive.

Father made her swear silence.

Paid her.

Threatened Elspie’s future employment if she spoke.

Agnes complied.

For years.

Then Claribel brought Seraphine back into the estate.

Agnes recognized her immediately.

The old woman stopped accepting the silence.

She told Claribel:

“Mrs. Thornwick is still alive.”

Claribel corrected her:

“Former Mrs. Thornwick.”

Agnes refused.

That became the fight.

A seventy-year-old seamstress defending a title nobody else had the courage to acknowledge.

Then Claribel locked her in the linen room.

Food controlled through keys.

May you like

Elspie forced to play along.

All because one old woman refused to call my fiancée my wife before she became one.
