Chapter 8

Then I learned Noah had been hiding food.

The dinner roll from that first night was not new behavior.

His pockets held crackers.

A dried piece of cheese.

Two wrapped cookies.

The lodge housekeeper had seen it before.

Never told me.

Why?

Mark said Noah was “learning resource control.”

Fancy words.

Same cruelty.

Food became reward.

No crying, dinner.

Cry too much, wait.

Refuse Claudia’s bedtime kiss, no dessert.

Mention Grace, plate removed.

I wanted to break something.

Instead I changed the house.

Food available whenever Noah was hungry.

No rank at meals.

No child eats last.

No food tied to behavior.

Basic.

Apparently revolutionary.

The first night Noah left half a potato untouched, he watched Grace’s face.

She smiled.

“Done?”

He nodded.

“Okay.”

He stared.

“That’s all?”

“Yes.”

He smiled.

May you like

Tiny.

Important.
