Chapter 7

Coralie had corrected Finnian for months.

Not constantly.

That would have been easier to notice.

Tiny moments.

“Use your words properly.”

“Don’t hold up the room.”

“Let your mother answer.”

“People get tired waiting.”

Adela heard some.

Not all.

Why say nothing?

Because Coralie was my fiancée.

Adela was household staff.

Same old arithmetic.

I asked:

“Did she ever threaten your job?”

“No.”

“Then why?”

Adela looked embarrassed.

“She didn’t need to.”

That sentence stayed with me.

Power often works best before it has to speak.

Coralie could say:

Perhaps Finnian should stay in staff quarters during formal events.

And Adela heard:

Your son’s presence depends on my tolerance.

I had invited staff families to selected celebrations because I wanted the estate less divided.

Nice idea.

Then I failed to ensure people beneath my future wife could challenge her safely.

That part belonged to me.

I told Adela:

“Finnian can attend any event he is invited to.”

She nodded.

“And if Coralie—or anyone—mocks the way he speaks, you leave with him.”

Her eyes widened.

“You do not need permission.”

That mattered more.

Then Finnian asked:

“Is Coralie m-mad at me?”

“Yes.”

Adela looked alarmed by my honesty.

I continued.

“Adults can be angry and still be responsible for what they do.”

He thought.

“Will she yell?”

“Not at you.”

“Promise?”

“Yes.”

That promise I could control.

He nodded.

Then:

“Was that man bad?”

Cassian.

Harder.

“He has done things I disagree with.”

“That’s not bad.”

I almost smiled.

“No.”

Good kid.

“Did he kiss Coralie?”

“Yes.”

“Are you sad?”

Six-year-olds are brutal.

“Yes.”

Finnian leaned into his mother.

Then whispered:

“I’m sad when people laugh at my words.”

I looked at him.

“I know.”

No grand reassurance.

Just recognition.

Then he surprised me.

“Can I have the microphone?”

Adela stiffened.

“Why?”

“I want to put it away.”

Good.

We went upstairs together.

Finnian took the wireless microphone from the dessert table.

Not ceremonially.

He simply switched it off and placed it in a drawer.

Then shut it.

Done.

May you like

He did not need to conquer it.

He needed the room to stop listening.
