Chapter 10

Corinne had not caused Elena to disappear.
She had been the person Elena trusted to help her do it temporarily.
That was the major twist.
Elena had gone to Harbor House because she was considering separating from Alistair.
Not because she stopped loving him.
Because she believed Alistair would never change his life while he was certain she and Sadie would always remain inside it.
Elena wanted a lawful plan before confronting him.
Temporary housing.
Independent access to money.
A written caregiving arrangement protecting Daphne’s role.
A safe location where Sadie could stay if conflict around the Montelli family escalated.
Most importantly, Elena wanted to speak to Alistair before filing anything.
The coordinator notes documented it clearly.
Client repeatedly states preference for reconciliation if partner agrees to reduce child’s exposure to criminal associates and move family business away from residence.
Another note:
Client does not wish to deprive father of relationship with child.
Another:
Client’s stated goal is leverage for change, not permanent disappearance.
Corinne had been present for those conversations.
She knew Elena loved Alistair.
She knew Elena wanted Sadie protected.
She knew Daphne was specifically named as the caregiver who should remain constant regardless of separation.
And she knew what Elena planned to do the morning after their last meeting.
Talk to Alistair.
The final coordinator note was written at 11:20 p.m.
Client leaving tonight. Plans to return home after drive to clear head. Will speak with partner tomorrow morning before deciding whether to activate temporary housing.
Elena never made it home.
The crash happened several hours later.
Corinne did nothing criminal that night.
She had performed her job.
That was what made everything afterward more disturbing.
After Elena’s death, Corinne repeatedly accessed the confidential file without authorization.
She learned details no future romantic partner should have possessed.
Alistair’s arguments with Elena.
Elena’s fear that he prioritized power over home life.
Her insistence that Daphne remain close to Sadie.
Her worry that Sadie might one day be pressured to accept another family structure before she was ready.
Corinne carried that knowledge for months.
Then she met Alistair at the fundraiser.
She recognized him immediately.
She said nothing.
Their relationship developed.
As the engagement became serious, Elena’s old wishes became obstacles Corinne could not stop seeing.
Daphne remained.
Elena’s photographs remained.
Sadie still called Elena Mom.
Corinne had entered the relationship already knowing where the emotional fault lines were.
Instead of respecting them, she tried to erase them.
She pushed to remove Daphne.
She complained about Elena’s photographs.
She demanded Sadie call her Mom.
And when Daphne intervened at the gala, Corinne’s anger produced the one sentence she could not take back.
You’ll disappear like her mother did.
It had not been a confession to murder.
It was something almost more intimate.
Corinne knew exactly why Elena left the house that night because she had helped her prepare to leave.
Alistair sat with the file open before him.
For twenty-one months, he believed Elena’s final hours were unknowable.
They were not.

The woman he intended to marry had known them before he ever knew her name.
And she had built a relationship with him without once telling him that his dead wife had trusted her first.
