Chapter 5

Cole Mercer was found before sunrise.

He had not fled far.

He was sitting in an empty maintenance cottage on Ashford property.

Waiting.

For what, even he did not seem to know.

I met him there.

No theatrics.

He looked destroyed already.

“I never meant to hurt Gabriel.”

“What were your instructions?”

“To delay him.”

“By accident?”

Cole looked down.

“Make it look like something went wrong on the road.”

No operational details.

I did not need them.

“Why obey Celeste?”

His silence gave me the answer before he spoke.

His daughter.

Twenty-two.

Recent surgery.

Expensive recovery.

Celeste had quietly paid several months of expenses through one of her private accounts.

Then reminded him.

Generosity turned invoice.

Familiar.

“Did she threaten your daughter?”

“No.”

Important.

“She said I owed her.”

“And you agreed.”

“Yes.”

Cole’s eyes filled.

“I thought Gabriel was dangerous.”

Of course she told him that too.

Exiled traitor returning secretly.

Boss unaware.

Stop him before he reaches the house.

Everyone given a story that made their piece feel reasonable.

Except Celeste knew the whole shape.

“Did you know I invited him?”

Cole looked stunned.

No.

There.

He thought he was protecting me from a surprise.

Celeste had turned my driver against my own instruction by withholding one fact.

I removed him from private service.

Immediately.

Not because he was evil.

Because he had demonstrated that debt could outrank verification.

He accepted it.

Then asked:

“Will my daughter lose the help?”

I stared.

That question showed the trap.

“No.”

His face broke.

I continued.

“Her recovery is not payment for your obedience.”

That became policy before breakfast.

No Ashford family member would privately fund staff needs in ways that created personal debt.

Help through shared family support.

No leash.

When I returned to the mansion, Gabriel was on the terrace.

Nora sat nearby with her wrist wrapped lightly.

They were speaking.

That stopped me.

“How do you two know each other?”

Gabriel smiled for the first time.

“We don’t.”

Nora looked embarrassed.

“He thanked me.”

“For what?”

“For speaking.”

Gabriel looked at me.

“Apparently that’s how people get back into this family now.”

The sentence was a joke.

May you like

Mostly.

It still landed.
