Chapter 1

For several seconds after Cesare spoke, nobody in the donor lounge moved.

Beyond the aquarium wall, blue light from the enormous tank rippled across the carpet while hundreds of silver fish moved silently behind the glass.

Inside the room, Ethan was on one knee beside the overturned equipment case.

Diane sat stunned among scattered foam coral pieces.

Vanessa remained beside the dining table with one hand pressed protectively over a stomach Cesare now knew was not pregnant.

Julian stared at her.

“Tell me that isn’t what I think it is.”

Vanessa opened her mouth.

Nothing came out.

Cesare looked down at Avice.

The little girl had stopped crying.

She was searching underneath the table.

“My card.”

Cesare crouched.

Her handmade paper card had slid beneath Diane’s chair.

He picked it up.

Avice immediately reached for it.

“No, Grandpa. It’s for you.”

Cesare handed it back without opening it.

“Then you give it to me when you’re ready.”

That mattered more to him than anything Vanessa might say.

He signaled to two bodyguards.

“Clear the room.”

Guests were quietly directed toward the main exhibition hall. No one was allowed to crowd Avice or photograph her.

Julian finally stepped toward Vanessa.

“How long?”

Vanessa looked at Diane.

Cesare saw it.

Julian saw it too.

Diane recovered first.

“This is being misunderstood.”

Cesare turned slowly toward his sister.

“You pulled a three-year-old onto the floor.”

“She was making a scene.”

“She was sitting down.”

Diane’s jaw tightened.

“She has been deliberately trying to embarrass Vanessa for weeks.”

Avice looked confused.

Cesare’s voice dropped.

“She is three.”

Diane said nothing.

Julian reached toward Vanessa’s stomach.

Vanessa backed away.

That movement answered him.

His face changed completely.

“You lied to me.”

“Julian, please.”

“For how long?”

Vanessa began crying.

Cesare did not interrupt.

He wanted to hear the first explanation before anyone had time to improve it.

Vanessa looked at Julian.

“I was scared.”

“Of what?”

“Losing you.”

Ethan laughed bitterly from across the room.

Everyone looked toward him.

He pushed himself upright.

“This is ridiculous. She made a mistake. That doesn’t give your father the right to turn this into an interrogation.”

Cesare looked at him.

“You tried to hit me thirty seconds after a fake pregnancy was exposed.”

Ethan stopped talking.

Cesare glanced at the cloakroom.

Then at Vanessa.

Then at Diane.

Three adults had reacted to Avice’s discovery as though a child had uncovered something much larger than a padded belly.

That was the first thing Cesare intended to understand.
